Position: AmeriCorps Teen Municipal Career Specialist

Pay: Living allowance Total: $22,100 ($884-taxes every 2 weeks over 50 weeks) + Education Award: $6,895.00

Shift Information: 1700 Hours Contract – Minimum of 36-38 hours/week. 50 weeks Contract (September 5th, 2023 – August 17,2024)

  • Monday: 8am – 5pm
  • Tuesday: 12pm to 8pm
  • Wednesday: 8am – 5pm
  • Thursday: 8am – 5pm
  • Friday: 8am – 5pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: Off

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Pass a criminal history check prior to the first day
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident

Position Description: City of Dubuque AmeriCorps Members implement key skill-building program to have the following impacts:

  • Youth experience programs promoting healthy lifestyles resulting in decreased youth risk-related behaviors.
  • Youth development skills to build meaningful and healthy relationships while experiencing inclusion and belonging.
  • Providing every young person with the opportunity to grow up safely and access their best possible future.

The Teen Municipal Career Specialist will play a pivotal role in the City’s Engineering Department by facilitating architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) career exploration activities for local youth. This position will lead and administer the Engineering Department’s Teen Municipal Career Program for high school students which involves classroom training, job shadowing, and summer job training opportunities. The AmeriCorps Member will also engage junior high students in similar activities that are targeted for a younger audience. This position engages with and builds relationships with youth at the Dubuque Multicultural Family Center and the Dubuque Community Schools, helping them connect their talents and interests to potential careers.

Essential Duties:

  • Support the development of the City’s Municipal Career Pathways Program by enhancing student engagement and providing career mentoring opportunities.
  • Collaborate closely with City staff to develop engaging classroom presentations, hands-on lab activities, field trips, job shadowing opportunities, and summer job training programs for high school students.
  • Engage junior high students through tailored activities designed to introduce them to the AEC industry and its related careers.
  • Recruit, manage, monitor, train, and document volunteer involvement with teen programming.
  • Document and maintain records of the impact on area youth who participate in the teen empowerment programs.
  • Participate in A-DRT training(s) to ensure the member has knowledge and ability to respond to disasters.
