GI Referral Specialist (RN/LPN/CMA)

Position is for the Multi-Specialty Clinic location

Grand River Medical Group is seeking a strong certified medical assistant or nurse (RN or LPN) to work as a GI Referral Specialist within our GI Clinic. As a GI Referral Specialist, you will work closely with the GI Clinic and Dubuque Endoscopy Center to provide the best patient outcomes. You will be responsible for assisting the GI clinicians and nurses in obtaining prior authorizations, scheduling of procedures, and education of patients.

The ideal candidate would be detail oriented, self-motived and work independently or part of a team. You will be responsible for prioritizing your workload and being able to multi-task while continuing to provide an exceptional patient experience.

This is a full-time position, 36-40 hours per week. This position has a flexible schedule with no nights, weekends or holidays. All nursing positions have the ability to pick up shifts at other clinic locations as desired. Grand River Medical Group's clinics are typically open from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide nursing care by using the nursing process and nursing theory in assessing patient's general condition and in making clinical decisions.
  • Promote wellness by providing patient educational materials, communicating clinicians' advice and instructions to the patient and/or family and assess the patient and/or family understanding of the instructions and information.
  • Schedule outpatient endoscopy procedures as requested by the treating clinician or clinician's nursing staff.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Clinical Supervisor and/or Nurse Coordinator to prevent equipment and staffing conflicts and schedule ancillary services relative to a procedure(s).
  • Prepare and distribute the daily surgery schedule to the Clinical Supervisor, Endoscopy Nurse Coordinator, and Endoscopy Receptionist.
  • Communicate to the Site Coordinator, Endoscopy Nurse Coordinator, and Endoscopy Receptionist same day and next day add-on cases, scheduling conflicts and any patient problems.
  • Capture complete and accurate patient clinical, demographic and insurance information prior to procedure.
  • Ensure that pre-certification, prior authorization, referrals and/or second surgical opinions are in place for endoscopy procedures. Accurately document care management requirements applicable to the center for outpatient services.
  • Track cancellations and monitor/maintain block time.
  • Provide patient education (handouts and video) on endoscopy procedures.
  • Provide patients the opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns.
  • Perform clerical duties such as, but not limited to faxing incoming and outgoing information, routing faxes/charts to clinicians and nurses at their work area, prepare documents for scanning to the electronic medical record.
  • Provide or participate in learning opportunities to meet the educational needs of the patient and family by assessing learning needs, formulating a teaching plan and initiating a teaching plan to meet the needs.
  • Coordinate patient care by triaging patient phone calls regarding urgency of appointments, communicating with clinicians and scheduling.

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited medical assistant program or school of nursing for Licensed Practical Nurses or Registered Nurses.
  • Minimum one year of Medical Assistant or professional nursing experience required, clinic experience preferred.
  • Must be a Certified Medical Assistant, LPN or RN with an active certification/license to practice in the state of Iowa; BSN preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification - required.
  • Mandatory Reporter Certification - required.
