TITLE: Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA)
DEPARTMENT: Surgery, Outpatient Clinic
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Full-time position (1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week).
Shifts may vary as work hours range between
6:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Monday – Friday).
Call will follow the general surgeon’s call (5 nights/week + 2 weekends per month). Response time is 30 minutes. Benefit eligible position!

JOB SUMMARY:
The Certified Surgical First Assist (CSFA) or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) works under the direct supervision of the general surgeon to help the effective and safe conduct of intrusive surgical procedures in the operating room and outpatient clinic setting. He/she provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, he/she also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care and functions as a liaison between the surgeon and patient care team. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation or procedure under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Communicating the surgeon’s preferences and specific patient needs to surgical team including but not limited to suture needs, specialty supplies, instrumentation, and equipment
• Providing preoperative skills such as assessing patient information, history, preoperative tests, safety measures and biopsy results; verifies patient identification and potential patient risk; and ensures applicable diagnostic exams are available for surgeon.
• Coordinating draping and positioning the patient to provide the necessary exposure for the procedure, as well as the surgeon preference and knowledge of common positions, use of positioning equipment and considerations for patient’s comfort and safety
• Performing and/or assisting with surgical site skin prep
• Having knowledge of and using all open and laparoscopic equipment necessary for all general surgery procedures and any further applicable instrumentation or actions deemed necessary by the surgeon
• Providing visualization of the operative site including retracting, clamping, tissue manipulation, suctioning, irrigating, sponging, manipulation of suture materials (e.g., tags, running sutures) and proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view
• Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis such as clamping, cauterizing, tying, ligating, applying clips and placing local hemostatic agents and direct pressure
• Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes, perform subcuticular closure technique, perform skin closure with method per surgeon’s directive (suture, staples, etc.), aiding in securing drainage systems to tissue, and postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic per surgeon’s directive
• Providing postoperative skills in patient care such as selecting and applying dressings to surgical wounds, patient transfer and transport, transfer of care, and monitoring for immediate complications
• Assisting with clean up and turnover of room to facilitate start of next procedure
• Collaborating with others to provide continuity of care
• Assisting with x-rays and specimens; assist with cleaning operating room and equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of an accredited surgical first assistant program and certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) and/or the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA).
Two years of experience as a First Assistant preferred.
