Elementary Principal
Dubuque Community School District

Desired Qualifications:
-- Minimum of master’s degree in school administration
-- Qualifications and certification as set by the code of Iowa and the Iowa Dept. of Education
-- Previous experience as teacher or administrator
-- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may accept

Job Goals:
-- To provide leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills that will promote the educational development of each student attending Elementary School
-- To work closely and collaboratively as a member of the Leadership Team of the Dubuque Community District
-- To collaborate with Elementary staff and families and with the larger Dubuque community to enhance educational program and learning opportunities for Elementary students
-- To successfully reach the Iowa Standards for School Leaders

Performance Responsibilities:

-- Promote high expectations for teaching and student learning and behavior
-- Align educational programs, plans, and actions with the district’s vision for student learning
-- Develop communication strategies to inform stakeholders of progress toward the vision of the district

-- Demonstrate ethical, trustworthy, and professional behavior that inspires others to higher levels of performance

-Equity and Cultural Responsiveness
-- Confront and alter institutional biases of student marginalization, deficit-based schooling, and low expectations associated with race, class, culture, language, gender and sexual orientation, and disability.
-- Demonstrate appreciation and respect for the full range of diversity in the school community

-Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
-- Ensure intellectually rigorous and coherent systems of curriculum, instruction, and assessment to promote each student’s academic success and well-being
-- Recruit, interview, and recommend teachers and staff to support quality instruction
-- Provide leadership, encouragement, opportunities, and structure for all staff to continually design more effective teaching and learning experiences for all students
-- Evaluate staff ensuring each student has equitable access to effective teachers, learning opportunities, academic and social support

-Community of Care and Support for Students
-- Cultivate an inclusive, caring, and supportive school community that promotes the academic success and well-being of each student
-- Recognize and respect each student’s strengths and culture as assets while ensuring each student is treated fairly, and respectfully given each student’s culture and context.

-Professional Capacity of School Personnel
-- Develop the professional capacity and practice of school personnel to promote each student’s academic success and well being

-Professional Community for Teachers and Staff
-- Serve as an effective spokesperson for the welfare of all members of the learning community
-- Engage in dialogue with other decision-makers to improve teaching and learning
-- Leads in the development of, knows, and supports the school improvement plan and accurately interprets and reports progress on goals

-Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community
-- Engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually beneficial ways to promote each student’s academic success and well being
-- Engage the community to create shared responsibility for student and school success
-- Promote and support parent/student/community involvement in the school
-- Connect students and families to the health, human and social services they need to stay focused on learning

-Operations and Management
-- Design and manage operational procedures to maximize opportunities for successful learning
-- Effectively manage board policies and procedures
-- Demonstrate effective communication skills with a variety of stakeholders
-- Manage fiscal resources of the school responsibly, efficiently, and effectively
-- Act with cultural competence and responsiveness in interactions, decision making, and practice

-School Improvement
-- Share leadership and decision-making
-- Act as lead agent of continuous improvement to promote each student’s academic success and well-being

Terms of Employment: 226-day contract beginning July 2024, or as agreed. Salary competitive and commensurate with education and experience. An attractive fringe benefit package is included.

The Dubuque Community School District reorganized in the early 1960's with the surrounding rural area and now serves a population of over 70,000. Presently, we have a student enrollment of approximately 10,120 students. A total staff of 2,522 employees (including 959 certified teachers, counselors and nurses) is presently employed by the Dubuque Community School District. The geographical area the Dubuque District serves is over 245 square miles and the District provides school bus transportation approximately 5,000 students each day.
