Job Overview
Performs responsible technical work in supporting general physical therapy activities and services by preparing work areas, transporting patients, and assistance in performing patient care and rehabilitation treatments.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a care plan coordinator, a charge nurse, or appropriate therapist.
Examples of Essential Duties:
- Transfers and transports residents from living area to therapy area, hospital or medical offices, etc., and back to living area.
- Prepares patients for treatments, assists with dressing and undressing, and helps ambulate.
- Assists various therapists, implements instructions for treatments, exercises and rehabilitative programs.
- Performs paraprofessional physical therapy, speech therapy and audiology tasks under the direction of qualified professional.
- Observes and evaluates patient needs for ambulation and range of motion therapy.
- Exercises patients to maintain and improve ambulation skills.
- Applies and observes arm splits, hand rolls, leg and neck braces and other appliances and devices.
- Prepares and checks rehabilitative equipment and supplies.
- Assists with evaluation of patient progress and reaction to therapy.
- Prepares and maintains charts and records.
- Performs certified nursing assistant and certified nursing assistant transporter tasks.
- Follows proscribed protocols for safety and infection control.
- Performs and monitors quality assurance standards and protocols.
- Monitors nutrition status and dining process of residents.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Typical Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED and one year of patient care experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of Certified Nursing Assistant certification. Must be on Iowa CNA registry.
Must pass the prescribed pre-employment physical, abuse registry review, and criminal background check.
Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain throughout duration of employment. Motor vehicle record must be free of moving violations/convictions for three years.

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements:
Vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Effective verbal speaking and hearing abilities are needed to handle communications with staff, residents, and others.
Requires pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance.
Requires standing most of the time to perform work responsibilities with regular walking between locations.
Requires ability to walk steps, reaching, squatting, stooping, bending, and sitting, pushing, pulling, twisting, gripping and apply physical intervention holds.
Some exposure to slippery surfaces when floors are wet.
Exposure to chemicals from cleaning compounds and exposure to bodily fluids require the use of personal protective equipment to safe guard against potential biological and chemical hazards.
Work is primarily indoors.
Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions and some outdoor work.
