SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:

Plans, organizes, promotes, and conducts the program of activities which help stimulate the social, physical, recreational, and intellectual development of the tenants as an integral part of their plan of care (for assisted living tenants).  The activity program will include internal and external opportunities for socialization across the religious and ethnic backgrounds of the tenants.  Assists Director as needed in management and marketing functions.  All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and philosophy of the Ellen Kennedy Living Center and Mercy Medical Center.

Customers include:  tenants, families/visitors, physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners, case managers, representatives of third party payers, representatives of referring agencies, interdepartmental and intradepartmental staff, vendors and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Demonstrates specific customer-focused behaviors regarding attitude, acknowledgement, privacy/confidentiality, communication skills, professional behavioral and timely responsiveness. Develops, implements and coordinates tenant-centered activity program, including community intergenerational programs. Demonstrates an appreciation of the heritage, values and wisdom of the tenants and an understanding of the aging process. Coordinates and implements volunteer program, tenant shopping, and outings (i.e., church on Sunday). Prepares with Director, the activities program budget, manages and controls costs of the activities program budget. Prepares and makes monthly calendar of activities with input from tenants, Case Manager, Director, families, staff and volunteers. Coordinates and prepares dementia-specific activities with Case Manager. Promotes positive public relations through contacting media about special events and generating sympathy, holiday and thank-you communication.

Assists Director in developing, implementing and performing the facility’s marketing plan. Meets with representatives of Tenant Council committee to discuss various issues. Assists in mealtime activities, including escorting tenants to the dining room and serving tenants if needed. Participates in management/supervisory functions, especially in the absence of the Director and/or Administrator.  Works closely with R.N. Case Manager. Assists tenants, visitors and staff with various duties as needed, such as fire drills and serving meals to tenants, for example. Demonstrates activity to impact change within your departments, with other departments, and within the Community Health Care System. Promotes and establishes effective relationships within the department, with other departments, physicians, and with facility guests and clients. Takes an active role in enhancing abilities to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must have knowledge of and ability to utilize a personal computer and the internet, including various software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and ability to learn Print Shop software that will be available for our tenants to utilize. Must possess strong organizational and time-management skills.  Must be able to conceptualize, organize, and implement an effective activities program for assisted living and independent living tenants. Ability to read, write and speak fluent English and must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Must possess a high degree of interpersonal relations skills. Must have good initiative, judgment, and be able to cope with change; be flexible. Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with employees, tenants, or families who themselves have been subjected to stressful situations. Adaptability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, tenants, and visitors and at least satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a health care work environment. Must be able to use standard equipment (i.e., typewriter, computer, hammer, carts, ladders, etc.) and tools, utensils, and equipment necessary for craft and activity program (i.e., glue gun, etc.). Works with frequent interruptions.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Most work will be performed indoors, although some outside work is necessary. Subject to frequent interruptions. Must be willing to work beyond normal working hours including weekends, evenings, and holidays. On rare occasions, may be subject to dust, chemical vapors (especially from craft activities), loud noises and other conditions that may be hazardous. Involved with tenants, staff, visitors, contractors and other people under stressful situations. Slight chance of exposure to infectious waste. Job requires (67-100% of work time) reaching, standing, walking, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, balancing, pulling or grasping.

Job requires frequent (34-66% of work time) fingering, pushing and lifting (heavy, 50+ pounds or more) (tenants in wheelchairs). Job requires occasional (34% or less of the work time) feeling, stooping, kneeling, crouching or climbing.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE RQUIRED:

Social work experience required. Prefer graduate of an activity course or a graduate of an accredited college with a degree in leisure activities, therapeutic recreation, or some other appropriate degree. Must possess or be able to obtain appropriate chauffeur’s license and hold a valid state driver’s license. CPR certification required. Must attend all in-service education sessions that relate to this position.
