Job Overview

Clarke University, a private, Catholic institution of higher learning in Dubuque Iowa is seeking to appoint a new Dean of Academic Affairs. The Dean will serve as the second officer within Academic Affairs, reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. With a focus on student retention, the Dean will assume responsibility for a wide range of duties within the Office of Academic Affairs including academic support, career services, and academic administrative procedures. The Dean will

  • Oversee the efforts to improve student retention through the institution’s Academic Support Center, effective academic advising, and the Department of first-year Studies.
  • Oversee the Office of the Registrar, Academic Advising unit, learning support, Accessibility Services, Career Services, and the Library
  • Collaborate with the Enrollment Management, Admissions, and Marketing offices in enacting clear protocols and timelines for communicating information about the University’s academic programs
  • Collaborate with the department chairs, the faculty and faculty committees to ensure transparency and clear communication within Clarke University’s shared governance system
  • Work with the department chairs and the Office of the Registrar, as the primary reviewer within the academic administration of the university’s Academic Catalog
  • Represent the academic administration on various faculty and institutional committees as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and credentials:

  • A terminal degree (PhD preferred).
  • A minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience in higher education
  • A commitment to student success and student engagement with specific experience in developing and overseeing student retention and persistence efforts a plus
  • Successful leadership experience at the level of department chair or above, including experience in curriculum development and oversight, and instructor evaluation
  • A commitment to transparency and clear communication
  • A demonstrated ability to work with a range of constituent groups. At Clarke University this will include the faculty, the Academic Affairs staff, the Office of Enrollment Management, and the Marketing Office
  • A demonstrated ability to employ data in decision-making processes.
