Job Overview

The Dubuque Rescue Mission is a faith-based nonprofit serving the Dubuque tri-state area for over 100 years.
We seek a new Executive Director to lead our growing organization. We are a community offering hospitality,
spiritual hope, food, shelter, clothing, and job development to those in need.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility satisfactorily. The
requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability to be successful.
Executive Director Position Description
Key Responsibilities:
● Leadership:
o Develop and execute the Mission’s vision in alignment with its core values and strategic goals.
o Lead program development to meet the evolving needs of the community within the existing
resource landscape of the Dubuque area.
o Report directly to the Board of Directors and provide regular updates regarding the Mission's
outcomes and progress on strategic initiatives.
● Operations Management:
o Oversee management staff in the execution of program operations, including retail stores,
transitional housing and shelter services, meal and garden programs, job training initiatives, and
resident case management.
o Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
o Prepare and provide monthly reports on programmatic activity, initiatives, and financial
statements to the Board of Directors.
● Community Engagement:
o Act as the primary spokesperson for the Mission, fostering relationships with patrons, guests,
residents, donors, partners, and local governmental and non-governmental organizations.
o Develop programmatic assessment methods to ensure services and service delivery are aligned
with and center the needs of those in the Dubuque area who are homeless or living in poverty.
o Represent the Mission advocating for the needs of those served.
● Financial Stewardship:
o Manage the organization’s budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency.
o Drive fundraising efforts and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective donors.
o Set a strategic financial direction for the organization and connect financial planning, execution
and strategy to our strategic plan in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
o Review and develop financial policies and procedures, including analyzing and improving
processes and systems to maximize access to and utility of financial information for planning,
execution and strategy in cooperation with the Board of Directors.
● Staff and Volunteer Leadership:
o Recruit, train, and mentor staff, cultivating a supportive and collaborative work environment.
o Directly supervise organizational leaders in their provision of services to the community,
including Thrift Store 1 and 2 Managers, Food Service Manager, Garden Manager, Shelter
Resident Manager, Warming Center Manager, and Transitional Housing Manager.
o Train and direct the efforts of the administrative team, including the Assistant Director, Program
Manager, and Finance Assistant.
o Ensure the safety of all Mission staff and guests while fostering a welcoming community
centering hospitality and respect for all.
o Oversee staff’s efforts for volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision.
Qualifications:
● Passion for serving the homeless and other marginalized populations and a demonstrated commitment
to the Mission’s values.
● Proven leadership experience in nonprofit management or related field.
● Strong financial management skills, including interpretation of financial statements; experience with
budget development and reporting; grant writing, implementation, and reporting; and fundraising
campaign development and implementation.
● Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and
previous experience with homeless populations.
● Experience in community engagement, partnerships, and coalition-building.
● Bachelor’s degree in social work, nonprofit management, or a related field preferred.
