Job Overview
POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Executive Director of Public Health, the Public Health Coordinator will perform tasks to achieve the Department’s mission in areas of core public and environmental health functions and essential services.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
• Participate in Public Health preparedness exercise simulations and coalition activities.
• Gather information from various sources to assess the health of the community to identify community and public health strengths and gaps.
• As assigned by the Director, provide administrative support to other boards and commissions.
• Assist with contract and grant management within the Health Department.
• May be required to serve on various committees as assigned.
• Assist with environmental testing and performing analysis as necessary to determine compliance with applicable rules, standards, and regulations.
• Assist with enforcement of environmental health regulations, complaint investigations, development of improvement plans and response activities.
• Assists with investigation of animal bites as indicated.
• Assists the Environmental Specialist with reports, data entry, and other applicable documentation.
• Review and update Dubuque County Public Health Department social media as needed.
• Any other duties as assigned or required by the Executive Director of Public Health or the Board of Health.
• Must be proficient in using Word, Excel, Outlook Calendar, Microsoft Teams, and additional computer programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
The successful candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate the individual can safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without, reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
• Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location to perform assigned tasks.
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to provide service to the public in a professional manner.
• Ability to establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with all levels of staff, outside agencies, and diverse public groups.
• Ability to proficiently utilize basic computer skills to perform word processing, electronic spreadsheet, or database tasks, and operate general office equipment.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
• Willing to work some evenings and weekends.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Possess knowledge of public health and the relationship with laws/regulations.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental, public health, nursing, or another applicable field.
REQUIRED LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, AND CERTIFICATIONS
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• National Incident Management System Certification for ICS 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800 within six months of hire.
• Water Proficiency Certification within six months of hire.
• Other certifications as may be identified.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Performs work in the field, including visits to homes, businesses, and organizations, as well as work in an indoor office setting. Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions.
• Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse.
• Have sufficient personal mobility to complete work at various facilities, which may regularly include, stand, sit, squat, kneel, bend, twist, and reach motions, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
HOURS OF WORK
Generally, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. May be required to work additional hours or to change hours with minimal notice because of operational and consumer needs.
