Situated among the limestone bluffs and the woodlands along the Great River Road, Dubuque, Iowa is home to the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (DABG). This nonprofit organization, established in 1980, is comprised of 52 acres and is the only arboretum and botanical garden in the United States staffed entirely by volunteers. Represented among the gardens are a Japanese garden designed by Hoichi Kurisu, a formal English garden, what is claimed to be the largest hosta garden in the United States (13,000 plants representing over 700 varieties), as well as annual and perennial gardens, children’s gardens, an herb garden, a cactus garden, All-America test gardens, and a rose garden. Also notable are the collection of unusual conifers and dwarf conifers and the native woodlands.
