Description:

Candidate will be in good academic standing within the Respiratory Program. The candidate will need to be able to participate in the department's weekend call rotation taking call every third weekend, work at least1 holiday and 1 holiday call and work within the PRN policy.

Under limited supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, the respiratory care student is responsible for providing basic respiratory care such as oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy with and without medications, chest physiotherapy, hyperinflation therapy, and EKG measurement to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy, objectives, standards of care, and procedures of Respiratory Care Services. Students may only perform those skills that are outlined in the Respiratory Care Student skill roster.

Must be enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current participation in respiratory classes and clinical rotations. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter. Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) will be required within 30 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in Mercy Medical Center's Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with Mercy Medical Center's Mission and Values.
2. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
3. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.
4. Performs basic respiratory therapy procedures under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist in accordance with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, and departmental and hospital policies and procedures.
5. Consults with and assists physicians and nurses with respiratory care plan for patients and facilitates the implementation of physician orders.
6. Assess patients and evaluates appropriateness and quality of respiratory care of individual patients for the purpose of making necessary modifications and adjustments of care plan and equipment use.
7. Reviews, collects, and evaluates relevant clinical data.
8. Communicates changes in the respiratory care plan with other healthcare team members.
9. Responsible for assembling, checking, cleaning, and correcting malfunctions on Respiratory Care equipment including, but not limited to: oxygen administration equipment, positive pressure breathing machines, aerosol delivery devices, pulse oximeters, and chest physiotherapy devices.
10. Responds to emergency situations and assists the licensed respiratory therapist as instructed.
11. Delivers and assesses efficacy of medicated aerosol therapy and oxygen therapy.
12. Documents in the patient’s medical record, and completes required departmental documentation.

2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.).
3. Must have knowledge of basic respiratory therapy procedures and have documented competency validation on all applicable modalities from the educational program.
4. Must demonstrate the ability to exercise professional judgment in dealing with patients, physicians, and other healthcare team members.
5. Must be competent and thorough in performing job functions to all age groups.
6. Must display satisfactory customer relation skills consistent with Mercy mission, values, and expectations.
7. Must display behavior consistent with Respiratory Care Services Citizenship Standards.
8. Must effectively utilize verbal and written communication skills.
9. Must be able to organize, prioritize, and function in an environment with multiple stress factors.
10. Must be able to use a computer for documentation and other relevant activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Job requires mobility in order to perform many of the technical functions.
2. Job requires use of hands for repetitive actions, fine manipulations, and simple grasping.
3. Job requires bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level, pushing, and pulling patients and/or equipment (21% to 50% of the time).
4. Must be able to assist with moving patients weighing more than 60 lbs. (20% to 34% or more).
5. Must be able to function in emergency situations (ie: Code blue).
6. Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level.
7. Must be able to speak.
8. Must be able to hear speech.
9. May be exposed to marked changes in temperature and humidity, infectious diseases, hazardous waste, and chemicals.
10. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives
