Description:
The Central Sterilization Supervisor is accountable for the direct supervision and coordination of unit operations. Provides leadership and promotes team building amongst the staff. Facilitates communication amongst staff, management, and other customers. Responsible for effective implementation of policies, procedures, and standards. Performs duties in clinical capacity as needed. Supervisor will identify opportunities for standardization and cost containment/reduction. Responsible for identifying physician practice patterns, supply and equipment utilization and staff utilization. Monitors significant departmental trends that can shift/affect the business unit.
- Assist with staffing, planning and control of the operational functions in conjunction with the requirements of all areas.
- Assume responsibility for the department in the absence of management personnel.
- Assist and instruct in the supervision of specialized technical skills requirements and work performance in the department.
- Sterilize instruments, equipment, linen, and supplies using various types of autoclaves.
- Assemble all instrument procedure trays, packs, supply carts following prescribed manner using protocol content lists as a guide, mark items with identifying data and distribute or store in designated areas.
- Dispense products requested by verbal, written or telephone requisitions for equipment and supplies.
- Maintain assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition to maintain required standards for handling of sterilized, clean materials and equipment.
- Maintain and manage staff productivity.
- Responsibility over payroll and staff scheduling.
- Apply Lean concepts to the inventory and workflow of the central sterilization area.
- Develop, plan and monitor staff competency and continuous educational programs.
- Create, update and revise departmental policies and procedures.
- Responsible for team talk evaluations on all direct reports in conjunction with OR director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment so as to foster a positive public image for MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information (i.e., HIPAA, Stark, etc.) Provides a high level of customer responsiveness and serves as a role model to encourage a commitment to customer service. A strong service orientation is required. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong analytical skills. Demonstrated positive interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, physicians and the community. Demonstrated knowledge of operations, including scheduling, staffing, budget management, workflow planning and staff development. Ability to coordinate efforts with team members within and outside of own department. Knowledge of data-management software applications. Ability to systematically trouble-shoot application problems and coordinate resolution. Strong customer-support skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The working conditions are noisy. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. (5% of time) a day. Exposure to body fluids on daily basis. Exposure to ethylene oxide on a daily basis. Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level. Must be able to speak. Must be able to hear speech. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree strongly recommended and/or CS or management experience. Certified Registered Central Service Technician required within 2 years of hire. Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire.
