Job Overview

Dubuque Y Crisis Services (DYCS) provides compassionate, trauma-informed support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other violent crimes. Our 24/7 crisis services, including our Crisis Line, Emergency Shelter, and Extended Stay programs, are dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of survivors, particularly women and children affected by gender-based violence.

We are looking for empathetic, dependable, and mission-driven advocates to join our team in creating a safe, supportive environment for those in crisis. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about advocacy, crisis intervention, and empowering survivors on their journey to independence.

Position Overview

Crisis Services Advocates provide emotional support, advocacy, and crisis intervention while ensuring a secure and welcoming environment for shelter residents. Advocates will work part-time shifts with flexible scheduling options, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and occasional holiday coverage. We work with our team to create balanced schedules that fit their availability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a safe and supportive atmosphere for survivors in shelter and crisis programs.
  • Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and resource referrals for program participants.
  • Maintain professional boundaries while fostering trust and empowerment in survivors.
  • Use sound judgment and decision-making skills in high-pressure situations.
  • Ensure confidentiality and uphold ethical service standards.
  • Assist with daily shelter operations, including light cleaning and organization of essential supplies (ability to lift 25 lbs required).
  • Communicate effectively through written and verbal reports.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong empathy, active listening, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a team-oriented approach.
  • Comfortable handling sensitive situations with maturity and professionalism.
  • Intermediate computer skills for documentation and communication.
  • Must pass state, federal, and child abuse background checks.
