Overview
The Director of Medical & Surgery Services is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the strategic plan for the departments of 5N, 5MS, Acute Rehab,Float Pool and Access Center; which is consistent with the organization's strategic business plans. The Director is responsible for the development, communication and successful execution of established objectives (financial and clinical) within the departments.

Responsibilities
Leadership/Staff Development
- Demonstrates and trains staff on the knowledge and skills necessary for providing care within specific sites of care and across the continuum.
- Is readily available and responsive to team members to ensure timely feedback to patient care questions or concerns.
- Removes barriers that impede care. Appropriately escalates concerns to executives.
- Demonstrates ability to function independently.
- Collaborates with physician leaders to improve Medical Surgical Services.
- Ensures staff maintains skills required to assess and anticipate patient needs.
- Continually seeks to grow and develop their skills and maintains an awareness of the external environment.
- Coach and assist team members with prioritization and delegation.
- Promotes an environment that encourages team feedback and engagement in problem solving.
- Exhibits knowledge in Quality Improvement, Patient Experience and building a high performing employee culture.
Service Line Performance & Outcomes
- Assures that Service Line outcomes including clinical quality, patient/staff experience, and financial targets are achieved.
- Assure key clinical indicators are identified, appropriate targets are set, and clinical results meet program and/or Organizational targets.
- Participates in annual forecasting and determining Service Line financial targets
- Plans and advocates for capital needs during the annual budget process
- Reviews dashboards of key targets, identifies variances and trends and develops action plans as needed.
- Uses and encourages innovation in resource utilization, assures fiscally efficient operations.
- Monitors outcomes and reviews programs and services to improve performance.
- Develops and regularly reviews succession plans for expected and unexpected vacancies in key Service Line positions.
Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment
- Clinical Practice Knowledge
- Ensure that written organizational clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in accordance with evidence based practice standards.
- Ensure compliance with the state Nurse Practice act, state board of nursing regulations and regulatory agencies standards.
- Patient Flow/Throughput
- Supervise patient flow.
- Ensure timely patient flow throughout the organization, monitoring the data and implementing changes when needed.
- Patient Safety
- Design safe clinical systems, processes, policies and procedures.
- Support a non-punitive reporting environment and a reward system for reporting unsafe practices.
- Assist in Evidence-based Practice/Outcome Management
- Interpret information from evidence-based nursing literature and research.
- Utilize research findings for the establishment of standards, practices, and patient care models in the organization.
- Disseminate research findings to patient care team members.
- Participate in studies that provide outcome measurements.
- Resource Management
- Develops annual and multiyear capital budget.
- Develops annual operational budget to support strategic plan.
- Executes successfully the established plan and the service through measurement, monitoring, analysis, reporting and adjusting the direction, allocation and utilization of available resources.
- Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to support program/practice changes to continually improve resource utilization.
- Quality Improvement Metrics
- Articulate the organization’s Quality Improvement program and goals.
- Target outcomes that are evidence based (benchmark).
- Improve processes through utilization of the evidence and sustain success.

Education:
|
· Graduate of accredited school of nursing; BSN required. |
· Master's degree in Nursing preferred. |
Experience:
|
· 5 years of professional experience required. 3-5 years of previous management experience required with proven understanding of financial, quality, collaboration, & service.

License(s)/Certification(s):
|
· Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. · Licensed RN in the state of Iowa or compact licensure state.
|
· Certification in specialty area or Nursing Leadership |
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
|
· Director must have knowledge and experience in general nursing care. Transformational leadership skills, developing and managing quality measures, project management experience, and strong team building characteristics are essential. Strong verbal communication skills, writing skills, and knowledgeable about state and federal regulatory bodies. Motivational self-starter, transparency minded, and collaborative. Knowledge of human resource management; program development; and fiscal management skill.
