Manager - Medical Unit
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Responsible for the clinical practice within the department.
- Assures safe, effective delivery of clinical services.
- On a daily basis, demonstrates own presence or involvement in department.
- Rounds and interacts with physicians, staff, patients, families and customers.
- Available to problem solve, support and assist the team.
- Upholds clinical practice standards and guidelines.
- Explores opportunities to improve clinical outcomes and takes action.
- Keeps self updated and current with new trends and technology related to clinical specialty, areas of responsibility, leadership and management.
- Monitors staffing pattern that supports effective clinical services within established budget parameters.
- Assures operations are responsive to changes in coding, billing and reimbursement.
2. Based on principles of growth and development, provides care appropriate to the age related needs of the patients served on his/her assigned unit, which may include:
Birth-28 days: Neonate
1-18 Months: Infant
18 Mo-3 Yrs: Toddler
3-6 Yrs: Pre-School Aged
6-12 Yrs: School-Aged
12-18 Yrs: Adolescents
18-65 Yrs: Adults
65+ Yrs: Geriatrics
- Collects, analyzes, interprets and applies age-specific data.
- Performs tasks/procedures, uses equipment in an age appropriate manner.
- Communicates and works with others in an age appropriate manner.
3. CQI.
- Develops, implements and monitors a Quality Improvement Plan that is reviewed and revised annually or as needed for CQI.
- Responds to customer complaints within 24-48 hours.
- Follows up on incident reports and takes immediate action to events of major consequences.
- Documents and takes action within 24 hours on potentially compensable events (i.e., accidents, professional errors, etc.).
- Documents and reports unsafe conditions.
- Demonstrates compliance with all licensing, accrediting, certification, and/or legal requirements.
4. Communication/ leadership.
- Assures actions and decisions are consistent with the Mission, Vision and Values.
- Works cooperatively with physicians, volunteers, employees and other NEIA personnel.
- Adapts current operations to the changing needs of customers, families, physicians, employees and the community.
- Keeps director / CNO informed of programs, problems and issues.
- Resolves problems independently as appropriate.
- Communicates to staff all relevant information; holds periodic communication meetings and ensures records are kept.
- Adheres to existing policies and procedures; assists in developing policies and procedures that are consistent with regulating agency guidelines and MercyOne mission and philosophy.
- Promotes and adheres to the elements of the Corporate Compliance Program.
- Manages change by educating team members to accept and acknowledge change, leading others through it with enthusiasm.
- Actively listens and often helps others to deal with stress and stressful situations.
5. Team Development.
- Selects competent staff at a level consistent with need, in a timely manner.
- Ensures new employees are oriented to department and job and that initial competency assessment is complete and documented.
- Delivers objective and honest feedback, giving credit when deserved.
- Completes annual competency assessments on or before due date.
- Administers and documents disciplinary action as appropriate.
- Encourages staff development (i.e., assesses needs, assists in development of education plan).
- Spreads enthusiasm and brings enjoyment to the workplace.
- Facilitates team discussion toward positive solutions.
- Maintains an acceptable turnover rate.
6. Budgeting.
- Prepares/contributes to an annual budget that is congruent with goals and objectives.
- Maintains acceptable level of expenditures consistent with budgeted amounts.
- Adjusts utilization of staff and materials to actual workload.
- Makes decisions about and effectively coordinates the use of all resources (people, materials, time) to achieve maximum productivity.
7. Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures.
- Attends required safety programs.
- Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.
- Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
- Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
- Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.
- Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
8. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):
- BSN or actively completing BSN degree within 3 years of offer acceptance.
- Minimum 5 years nursing experience; 3 years’ experience in nursing leadership.
- Current Iowa RN license. Active IL RN license if working in IL.
- BLS.
- ACLS.
- Mandatory Reporter.
- High language, high math, high reasoning ability.
- Personal computer.
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to be diplomatic. Strong leadership and teambuilding skills. Ability to prioritize and delegate.
