Director of Clinical Nursing - Medical Unit
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assures that individual rights are honored, and that care is delivered according to those rights and to individual wishes.
- Demonstrates ethical conduct and practice consistent with the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (2001).
- Participates in nursing and organizational policy formulation and decision-making involving staff.
- Accepts organizational accountability for services provided to patients and families in defined clinical service area(s).
- Evaluates the quality and appropriateness of healthcare in defined clinical service areas.
- Coordinates nursing care with other healthcare disciplines and assists in integrating services across the continuum of health care.
- Participates in the recruitment, selection, and retention of personnel, including staff members representative of the population diversity as possible.
- Maintains awareness of and responds to issues in areas including the following: Ethnic, cultural and diversity changes in the population, Political and social influences, Financial and economic issues, The aging of society, Ethical issues related to healthcare
- Assumes responsibility for staffing and scheduling personnel. Assignments reflect appropriate utilization of staff members, considering scope of practice, competencies, patient needs, and complexity of care.
- Assures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development of personnel.
- Provides guidance for and supervision of personnel and evaluates performance.
- Plans, implements, monitors and is accountable for the budget in defined areas of service.
- Participates and involves the nursing staff in evaluative research activities and assures evidence-based practice.
- Provides and/or facilitates educational experiences for nursing and other students.
- Ensures accountability for professional practice in defined clinical service areas consistent with the ANA Standards of Professional Performance.
- Participates in the development of innovative clinical and professional improvement initiatives in areas of accountability, across the nursing organization and within MercyOne Medical Center as a whole.
- Serves as a professional role model and mentor to nursing staff.
- Upholds the customer service standards in defined clinical service areas, assuring that patient, families, and all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Medical Center’s mission and values.
- Assures nurse participation in shared governance in defined area of service.
- Personally, adheres to and holds staff accountable for behaviors that are consistent with MercyOne Citizenship Standards.
- Meets leadership competency requirements within the Trinity Health Learning Network as specified below and carries out learning plan for ongoing personal development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):
- Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree required. Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree required within 4 years of hire.
- The Clinical Director must hold an active license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.
- Professional certification in nursing administration or other relevant management or applicable specialties. The Clinical Director will have clinical nursing experience and 3 – 5 years’ experience in a nursing administrative/leadership role. Member of an applicable professional nursing organization and seeks continuing education and professional development opportunities for lifelong learning.
- Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.
- Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) will be required within 30 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter.
