MercyOne Dyersville Medical Center is a 20-bed critical access hospital serving 17 rural communities in western Dubuque county. As a Level IV Community Trauma Care Facility, it offers 24/7 emergency and trauma services, along with acute and skilled inpatient care, ambulatory surgery, home care and specialty clinics. The center includes a fully equipped laboratory, imaging services, retail pharmacy with drive-thru and delivery and Phase II cardiac rehabilitation tailored to those recovering from heart events. Outpatient and inpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy are available locally to help patients regain function and independence. MercyOne Dyersville Medical Center delivers compassionate, personalized health care that keeps essential care close to home.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in Mercy One Dubuque Medical Center's Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with Mercy One Dubuque Medical Center's Mission and Values.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  • Displays effective communication with a polite, compassionate, and caring attitude and demonstrates a responsiveness to needs of patients and families.
  • Must be accurate and thorough in performing job functions.
  • Must be competent to provide care in the Emergency Department (ED).
  • Demonstrates customer friendly behaviors and promotes customer satisfaction.
  • Represents Mercy One Dubuque at Iowa trauma meetings and meets state requirements through reverification and certification processes.
  • Develops multidisciplinary trauma educational programs.  
  • Works closely with the Trauma Program Medical Director to develop a quality trauma program.
  • Develops a quality improvement plan utilizing the trauma registry and concurrent patient review.
  • Addresses quality issues with nurses, physicians and EMS involved in the continuum of trauma care.
  • Maintains the trauma registry.
  • Coordinates and acts as a resource in injury prevention activities.
  • Teaches TNCC and acts as course director of the TNCC program.
  • Organizes and coordinates Trauma Committee meetings with the Trauma Program Medical Director. 
  • Assists in the ED when needed to help with patient flow.  
  • Shares trauma, EMS and PEDS data with ED staff and physicians at department meetings to include thoughtful analysis of the data. 
  • Liaises between Mercy One and EMS to create a strong working relationship.  
  • Audits EMS charts to find trends that may need to be addressed in the performance improvement process.  
  • Provides EMS data to other departments as needed (e.g., Shared Services for contract review).
  • Works with Stroke Coordinator to improve pre-hospital care for patients.   
  • Assists EMS Medical Directors with the review of quality data and the provision of education to EMS.  Where appropriate, obtains CEHs for EMS.
  • Attends EMS meetings as a representative of Mercy One Dubuque Medical Center and Mercy One Dyersville Medical Center.
  • Liaises with NICC and promotes a positive clinical experience for EMT students at Mercy One.  
  • Manages EMS supplies, linens, and food by investigating ways to better distribute those resources while reducing waste. 
  • Coordinates the Dubuque County Drug Box Exchange Program on behalf of Mercy One in collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy.  
  • Provides education to ED staff on new or changing EMS practices, equipment, or legislative issues. 
  • Acts as a resource to ED staff and to other hospital staff with regard to HazMat and decontamination (decon) practices.  Assists with fit testing as able.
  • Participates in pediatric performance improvement activities. 
  • Coordinates the Pediatric Emergency Medicine meetings to include taking minutes and providing feedback on performance improvement activities.
  • Creates and revises emergency pediatric policies with input from the interdisciplinary committees.  
  • Participates in pediatric injury prevention programs. 
  • Assists the Emergency Department director with scheduling and payroll.
  • Assists the Stroke Coordinator with day-to-day reviews when needed. 
  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

  • Must be able to work independently and productively in a fast-paced setting involving multi-task functions and projects.  Ability to plan, organize and perform duties with minimal supervision and with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to identify, compile and present data effectively from many different sources for management decision-making.
  • Must possess advanced analytical skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative. 
  • Must possess working knowledge of Word and Excel Office products.
  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on the changing needs of the department and/or the organization.

SCHEDULE:

  • Day shift
  • 40 hours per week
  • 12 hour shifts
  • Weekend/holiday rotation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES
(EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED):

Education, Licensure and Certification:

  • Current RN license: BSN required. 
  • TNCC Instructor certification (or obtain within 1 year of hire). 
  • Nursing certification (or obtain within 1 year of hire).  
  • Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 3 years thereafter.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of trauma/critical care nursing experience. 
  • EMS experience desired. 

Special Skills, Competencies, and Aptitudes:

  • Computer Proficiency:  Demonstrated experience and competency with e-mail and a variety of web-based programs and browsers, with the willingness and ability to update and increase skills as needed to meet the goals of the departments.   Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.
