Job Overview
The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium is an outgrowth of the Dubuque County Historical Society, which also operates the Mathias Ham Historic Site, is home to the National Rivers Hall of Fame, and supports a national outreach program called RiverWorks Discovery. Its mission is to inspire stewardship by creating educational experiences where history and rivers come alive.
We are hiring one General Maintenance employee to assist with all maintenance needs of the organization. This is a multifaceted role that provides preventative support, inspections, improvements, and repairs.
This is a full time, permanent position with rotating weekend availability required. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Benefits include vacation time, sick time, paid holidays, medical, dental, flex plan, and 403b retirement plan.

Primary duties
- Perform general building maintenance of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and Mathias Ham Historic Site properties, including repairing structural damage, painting, minor plumbing, basic mechanical knowledge, preventive measures, etc.
- Perform routine grounds maintenance of the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium and Mathias Ham Historic Site properties, including lawn care, snow removal, landscaping, etc.
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings, equipment, and systems and identify any issues
- Identify and repair potential safety hazards in order to avoid damage and injury
- Assist with the set up and tear down for exhibits and events
- Additional duties as assigned
Additional duties
- Work with the Facilities team to ensure strict adherence to all relevant state and federal guidelines for safety and productivity, including OSHA and ADA
- Work with the Facilities and Manager on Duty team to conduct various safety drills
- Upon hiring you will Complete safety, bloodborne pathogens, fire extinguisher, CPR, and any other required trainings
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience as a maintenance technician or related position
- Strong understanding of general maintenance processes and methods
- Experience in operating a variety of equipment, including lawn mowers, hand tools, power tools, snow blowers, etc.
- Working knowledge of common tools, appliances, and devices
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Must be able to perform any physical demands of job duties, either with or without reasonable accommodation.
