Description:
SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:
Involved in the provision of pharmaceutical care to inpatients, outpatients, and home health patients ranging in age from premature newborns to geriatrics. Involved in the provision of educational and employee services to patients, guests, clients, hospital, and medical staff of MercyOne Medical Center (MMC).
Customers include: Pharmacy staff and management, medical and hospital staff and hospital clients and guests.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Demonstrates specific customer focused behaviors.
2. Supports and abides by all MMC departmental and safety policies and procedures.
3. Acts in a professional manner reflecting the mission, philosophy, and values of MMC.
4. Performs dispensing functions; interprets physician orders, reviews therapy for age and appropriateness, dispenses medications, checks patient trays, compounds miscellaneous drug products, etc.
5. Directs IV additive system; prepares profiles and labels, compounds IV admixtures utilizing aseptic technique, dispenses, IV’s, etc.
6. Participates in clinical pharmacy activities under the guidance of the clinical coordinator (pharmacokinetics, drug information, D.U.E. facilitating educational programs, etc.).
7. Maintains current knowledge of departmental policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations and maintains any documentation required by the same.
8. Consults and advises nursing, allied health, home health care, medical staff, and patients on drug therapy.
9. Supervises work of pharmacy personnel as needed.
10. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
11. Demonstrates activity to impact change within your department and with other departments.
12. Promotes and establishes effective relationships within the department, with other departments, physicians, and with hospital guest and clients.
13. Takes an active role in enhancing abilities to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
1. Must be able to effectively supervise technical staff.
2. Must be accurate and thorough in performing job functions.
3. Must perform all functions in a timely fashion to optimize patient care.
4. Must demonstrate an ability to exercise professional judgment in decisions relating to medication therapy.
5. Must possess the ability to effectively and courteously communicate with other members of the pharmacy, medical and hospital staffs and guests and clients.
6. Must be competent to provide care within assigned unit to the population described in the unit's description of service.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. In an 8-hour day, employee may sit 2 hours, stand and/or walk 6 hours.
2. Mobility, dexterity, fine motor skills and ability to use hands in repetitive motion tasks such as grasping and fine manipulating is required.
3. Frequent (21%-50% of work time) bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and pushing and pulling.
4. Occasional (6%-10% of work time) lifting and carrying of objects weighing 35 lbs. or less.
5. Occasional (6%-10% of work time) squatting, climbing 2 feet and balancing.
6. Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level.
7. Must be able to speak and hear speech.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy.
2. Licensed to practice pharmacy in the State of Iowa.
3. Previous hospital experience in unit-dose, IV additive and clinical pharmacy programs is desirable.
