Job Overview
- Inspect lumber for defects such as knots, splits, warping, and decay
- Measure dimensions and assess moisture content
- Assign grades based on established rules (e.g., structural vs. appearance grades)
- Mark or tag lumber to indicate grade and classification
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, such as those from the National Hardwood Lumber Association or regional grading agencies
- Sort and organize lumber by grade for processing or shipment
- Maintain records of graded materials
- Work with sawmill or production teams to ensure quality control
- Knowledge of wood species and their characteristics
- Understanding of grading rules and quality standards
- Attention to detail and strong visual inspection skills
- Ability to use measuring tools and grading equipment
- Physical stamina (standing, lifting, working in mill environments)
- Basic math and recordkeeping skills
- High school diploma or equivalent
- On-the-job training is common
- Certification programs (such as NHLA inspector training) may be preferred or required
- Sawmills, lumber yards, or manufacturing facilities
- Exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures
- May require protective gear (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection)
