Description:

Plans, administers, implements, and evaluates occupational therapy for all appropriate programs and services within the PM&R department, for all patient age groups. Possesses the skills necessary to provide direct patient care specific to each age group in accordance with department protocol. The age of the patients served range in age from infants to geriatrics.

Customers include: patients, family/visitors, co-workers, physicians and their office staff, social

services, dietary/nutrition vendors/volunteers, outside agencies, students and all Mercy Medical Center employees assisting the department in the delivery of patient care, i.e. nursing, etc.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in MercyOne Medical Center's Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Medical Center's Mission and Values. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed. Completes Patient Evaluations/Treatment.

  • Utilizes appropriate evaluation tools for diagnosis.
  • Identifies goals with patient.
  • Follows physician orders/seeks changes in orders when appropriate.
  • Consistently performs tasks and procedures safely, correctly and effectively to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork.
  • Timely completion.

Supervises and gives direction to Support Staff and COTA.

  • Provides co-treats and supervision of COTA per state regulations.
  • Provides direction to support staff and follows guidelines of practice acts and Medicare.
  • Coordinates treatments with staff and communicates expectations of team.

Documentation:

  • Completed on day of service, as much as possible with patient present.
  • Documentation matches charges.
  • Documentation addresses goals and progress of patient.
  • Identifies skilled need and medical necessity.
  • Includes total treatment time and documentation necessary for regulatory guidelines and reimbursement.

Recertifications:

  • Completed timely.
  • Follows state and regulatory guidelines.

Charges:

  • Follows state and regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in state and regulatory guidelines.
  • Documentation supports submitted charges.
  • Completed on day of service.

Professionalism:

  • Demonstrates and conducts self according to Code of Ethics.
  • Supportive of Mercy’s mission and values.
  • Provides constructive suggestions and input to department needs.
  • Provides leadership for support staff and COTA.
  • Attends educational seminars and expands knowledge.
  • Maintains licensure.

Communicates with staff.

  • Utilizes voicemail and email to streamline process.
  • Efficiently directs calls to appropriate person.
  • Provides information appropriate for persons involved (need to know basis).
  • Contributes to positive work environment.

  • Proficient in use of fax/email.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must be able to function as an occupational therapist in all commonly practiced aspects of patient evaluation and treatment appropriate for the assigned age group.. Must have ability to give clear instructions to individuals and groups ranging from infant to geriatric. Must have ability to plan day-to-day activities and work independently. Must be able to put patients at ease and make them comfortable. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to effectively work with other hospital employees and guests. Must demonstrate the ability to interact with others in a helpful and courteous manner.

7. Must be competent in providing clinical care to the patient population described in the department’s description of services section of the policy manual.

8. Demonstrates and promotes customer satisfaction.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Frequent (21-50% of work time) intense emotional interaction with clients is common. Frequent (21-50% of work time) physical assistance to clients (e.g., transferring, assistance in restroom), involving lifting, reaching, bending and stooping. Job requires frequent (21 – 50% of work time) standing and walking. Occasional (6- 10 % of work time) contact with incontinent patients, patients with open wounds or disfiguring injuries. Frequent (21-50% of work time) contact with people in severe pain. Job requires the ability to occasionally lift and carry objects weighing approximately 50 lbs. Job functions require a high level of concentration, prioritization of tasks. Must have fine motor skills to grasp. Must be able to see at a near normal visual acuity level. Must be able to speak. Must be able to hear speech.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Registration through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NCBOT) Bachelor’s Degree Occupational Therapy from an accredited program. Licensure (or eligibility for licensure) by the State of Iowa to practice as an Occupational Therapist.
