Parking System Technician

Job Overview

Position Summary

Perform electrical and mechanical work involving the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of various parking systems, facilities, and parking control systems.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of parking ramps and lots and in the installation, maintenance, inspection and repair of parking meters and various parking control systems and lighting equipment; and is performed according to general or specific instructions provided by the Parking Operations Supervisor who may inspects work while in progress and upon completion.

Job Duties

JOB DUTIES:

• Inspect parking meters and parking system control and lighting equipment; the work of other employees; mechanical equipment to locate damage, defects, or wear; electrical control equipment; parking facilities; and mechanical components of vehicles to identify problems.
• Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts and mechanisms including meter poles and housing.
• Test new and rebuilt electronic mechanisms and mechanical equipment to ensure proper functioning; and fluids to identify contamination or other problems.
• Adjust equipment to ensure optimal performance.
• Order materials, supplies, or equipment.
• Maintain parking ramps and lots; parking meters and parking system control and lighting equipment; lighting, power and related systems; time and other records; and work equipment or machinery.
• Troubleshoot electronic mechanisms, electrical circuits, equipment or systems operation problems.
• Read technical information needed to perform maintenance or repairs.
• Develop equipment or component configurations.
• Install parking meters and parking system control and lighting equipment electrical components, equipment, or systems; machine or equipment replacement parts; electrical components, equipment or systems; energy-efficient heating, ventilation or air conditioning (HVAC) equipment; and insulation in equipment or structures.
• Repair parking ramps and lots; parking meters and parking system control and lighting equipment; meter poles and housing; lighting, power and related systems; electrical circuits or wiring; and structural components.
• Lubricate equipment to allow proper functioning.
• Clean electronic mechanisms, equipment, parts, or tools to repair or maintain them in good working order; and work areas.
• Remove snow and ice from streets and walkways.
• Perform manual agricultural or horticultural tasks.
• Operate computer software programs for the parking ramp access and control systems; welding equipment; light and medium equipment; small and larger mowers; snowplows; and hoists or other moving or lifting equipment.
• Estimate costs for labor or materials.
• Record meter history information regarding parts, materials or repair procedures.
• Align equipment or machinery.
• Disassemble parking meters and equipment for maintenance or repair.
• Measure distances or dimensions.
• Lay out work according to specifications.
• Plan work procedures.
• Assemble mechanical components or machine parts; and structural components.
• Fabricate parts or components.
• Train others in operational procedures.
• Supervise employees as a lead person; and work done under contract.
• Paint meter poles and housing; and surfaces or equipment.
• Grind parts to required dimensions.
• Instruct the work of other employees.
• Exchange meters.
• Collect money from parking meters.
• Service lighting, power and related systems.
• Confer with factory representatives.
• Recommend equipment needs.
• Address design problems.
• Prepare reports.
• Attend to safety items such as properly functioning lighting, emergency call/response equipment, stair tower damage and general housekeeping needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Mechanical and Electrical - Knowledge of electricity, electronics, parking meters, parking system control, lighting equipment, machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, codes and maintenance.
• Building and Construction - Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the electrical and mechanical construction or repair of buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
• Safety – Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the right tools.
• Equipment Maintenance - Planning and doing the basic maintenance on equipment.
• Troubleshooting - Figuring out what is causing equipment, machines, wiring, or computer programs to not work.
• Arm-Hand Steadiness - Keeping your arm or hand steady.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or equivalent;
• Coursework or experience in Electronics, Building/Property Maintenance or related field;
• Basic computer experience such as data entry or word processing;
• Or any equivalent education and experience.
• A state issued Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience as an Electrician or Electronics Technician.
• Associate’s degree in Electronics, Building/Property Maintenance or related field.

Supplemental Information

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within fifty (50) miles of the corporate limits of the city of Dubuque as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
