Job Overview
We’re hiring a Class A CDL Driver & Steel Yard Laborer to join our steel fabrication team. This full-time position runs Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with opportunities for overtime. Drivers are home every evening with no overnight travel required.
Skills
- Problem Solving: be able to assess material sizes, weights, and shapes to properly plan, load, and secure deliveries.
- Mathematical: basic understanding of weights, load limits, and distributions to safety operate within DOT regulations.
- Attention to Detail: ensure all materials are accurately tracked, properly loaded, and secured according to the load list.
- Communication: coordinate with shop employees, project managers, and sit contacts to ensure accurate and timely deliveries.
- Adaptability: must adjust quickly to different loading situations, material changes, delivery sites, and yard conditions.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate company trucks to deliver structural and miscellaneous steel to project sites.
- Load and secure material according to DOT requirements using straps, chains, and other methods.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections and complete all required DOT logs and reporting.
- Assist with unloading supplier material deliveries into the steel yard.
- Organize and maintain an efficient, clean, and safe steel yard.
- Locate, pull, and load material for shop employees and machines.
- Utilize company barcoding software to track, scan, and verify materials.
- Perform general yard duties such as moving and storing steel as assigned.
- Maintain company fleet vehicles, including scheduling routine maintenance and repairs.
- Comply with and maintain required company standards of safety, quality, and DOT regulations.
- Perform other general duties as required.
Qualifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) & valid state driver's license required.
- Pass DOT drug screening and physical exam.
- Pass company specific driving exam.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.
- Related experience with steel handling, trucking, or construction is helpful.
- Familiarity with heavy equipment operation (forklift, SkyTrak) is a plus.
