Position Summary
Under general direction, the Sanitation Driver will operate a semi-automated and/or an automated solid waste collection vehicle to manually collect, haul and unload trash, large items, recyclables, or organics from City residential and/or business customers; operate a snowplow and dump truck, shovel snow and remove ice from streets and walks as directed; and perform other duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work in this job class involves the collection and dumping of solid waste, refuse or recyclable materials from containers into truck; and may involve driving a truck.
Job Duties
JOB DUTIES:
- Properly operate automated side loaders (ASLs), rear loaders, and semi-automated trucks or material-moving equipment; snow and ice equipment; and packing or other material processing equipment.
- Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance.
- Safely navigate tight residential areas, high-traffic zones, and adverse weather conditions.
- Collect and dispose of trash, large items, recyclables, and organics.
- Perform heavy manual labor and/or mechanically lift and empty to assure that materials are collected properly.
- Load and transport garbage, trash, large items, recyclables, and/or organics to designated disposal sites
- Maintain assigned vehicle by performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Adhere to all OSHA, DOT, and City safety regulations to minimize workplace hazards.
- Utilize onboard route software, fleet maintenance reporting systems, and two-way radio communication to complete assignments efficiently.
- Provide exceptional customer service, responding to inquiries, and issuing compliance tags when necessary.Participate in waste reduction and recycling education efforts to improve community compliance.
- Complete assigned paperwork and reports including timesheets and work orders.
- Notify other personnel of emergencies, problems, or hazards.
- Clean vehicles or vehicle components and report vehicle or equipment malfunctions.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 6 months experience in data entry
- Possession of and ability to maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes endorsement
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes, combination, and tanker endorsements
- Experience in the operation of medium and heavy trucks
- Experience in Solid Waste Collection
Supplemental Information
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties may be required to be performed with exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, noise extremes, strong odors, smoke/dust/pollen/dirt, machinery hazards, traffic hazards, disease/pathogens, vibrations, etc. Based upon need, will work throughout the year including responding to weather related emergency operations and serving on call including during holidays and weekends.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require repetitive motions; the ability to lift, drag, and push containers in various weather conditions while working for extended periods of time; standing; repetitively lifting containers weighing up to 100 pounds (assisted); repetitively stepping on and off an elevated platform; near and far vision (with or without corrective device); hearing capabilities (with or without corrective device); work with noise-producing tools and equipment; and ability to drive motorized vehicles. Some tasks duties require visual and auditory perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:
Employee shall establish their principal place of residence within fifty (50) miles of their place of employment as soon as practicable after appointment, but within two years of appointment.
FLSA (OVERTIME) STATUS: Non-exempt
