Job Overview
We’re looking for a hands-on master maker with the mind of an engineer and the eye of a designer. This isn’t a “just follow the blueprints” kind of role—it’s about shaping the way we build one-of-a-kind exhibits, displays, and visitor experiences that wow people across the country.
Ideal candidates are passionate about craft, hungry to learn, and ready to shape a team. If you’ve ever stared at a SketchUp model and instantly figured out the best way to build it, ship it, and make it last—we want to talk.
🔧 What You'll Do
- Design and build custom displays, exhibits, and scenic elements using MDF, plywood, acrylic, sculpted foam, and specialty finishes
- Translate design intent into smart, buildable shop drawings and CNC-ready files
- Work hands-on in the shop—fabricating, assembling, testing, and installing
- Collaborate with designers to engineer elegant, efficient, and shippable solutions
- Lead regional installs (1–3 days, 10–15 times/year) and solve problems on-site
- Mentor fabrication artists and help grow the next generation of shop talent
- Maintain high craftsmanship standards while also meeting timelines and budgets
- Contribute to process improvement and departmental leadership over time
🎯 Who You Are
- A builder at heart who loves working with your hands and solving creative challenges
- Comfortable working in both CAD (SketchUp, VCarve, etc.) and on the shop floor
- Skilled at reading and developing shop drawings, plans, and build files
- Experienced with materials like wood, laminates, foam, paint, and basic electronics
- Known for curiosity, precision, and pride in your work
- Able to see the big picture and the fine details — from installation logistics to long-term durability
- A lifelong learner who thrives on figuring things out and trying new methods
- Eager to grow into a team leadership role (and eventually run the department)
- An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in fine arts, graphic arts, or a related field (such as design engineering), plus 10+ years of professional experience.
💡 Bonus Points For
- Experience with CNC routing and digital fabrication tools
- Familiarity with themed environments, exhibits, or scenic production
- Experience leading installs or working in client-facing roles
- Comfort with a fast-paced, highly creative team environment
- Forklift certification (or willingness to get certified)
