Area Residential Care supports individuals with intellectual disabilities in residential and day services settings. The Education Specialist provides training to employees to prepare them to successfully support our consumers in their daily living and enable to them to achieve their highest quality of life. Due to career advancement, we are currently seeking two full-time Education Specialists. Responsibilities include:

  • Develop pre-service training schedules for new employees;
  • Provide update and enrichment training to all staff;
  • Provide on-the-job feedback to new and veteran staff;
  • Track and maintain training records; and
  • Assist in the development and teaching of adaptive intervention techniques.

About you: Qualified applicants will have:

  • An Associate degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related human services field is preferred; equivalent education and experience may be considered;
  • Demonstrated ability to train others;
  • Experience providing direct support, prompts, etc.;
  • Professional communication skills;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office/Office 365;
  • Familiarity with learning management systems, i.e. Relias;
  • A valid driver's license and driving record that meets agency authorized driver criteria.

Highly qualified candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related human services field and previous experience working with adults with intellectual disabilities. Evidence of success in working with adult learners is a plus. Current certification as a CPR/First Aid and/or Nonviolent Crisis Intervention trainer is highly desirable; trainer certification in these topics will be provided if needed.

Area Residential Care is a private, non-profit, 501(c) 3 organization, created in 1968 by a group of parents and other interested parties. Its mission is to empower people with intellectual disabilities to achieve their highest quality of life. From its inception, Area Residential Care’s purpose has been to provide community-based services for persons with intellectual disabilities. The organization has grown over the past 40 years to serve an average of 250-275 people with disabilities annually; providing residential, vocational, and day services in Dubuque and Dyersville communities.

Through a variety of community-based residential and vocational programs, Area Residential Care helps people with disabilities become active, participating members of the community. Giving people with disabilities choices about where and how they live, work and socialize with their non-disabled peers is the essence of Area Residential Care’s purpose.
