Roles and Responsibilities: Responsible for providing phlebotomy and lab services as prescribed by federal law and Iowa regulations.

Effectively collaborates with all members of the healthcare team to include staff, patient and patient's family and preferred provider.

General Functions

  • Performs phlebotomy: venous and capillary draws on adults and children.
  • Performs blood, urine, and other applicable tests.
  • Collects labels and processes all lab orders and specimens (throat, nasal, urine, biopsy samples) according to proper lab protocol.
  • Ensures proper storage, handling and transportation of all specimens to contracted lab.
  • Communicates actively with courier as needed for expedited labs.
  • Performs in-house lab testing in accordance with CLIA testing protocols.
  • Uses standing orders to perform in-house and outsourced labs as outlined by clinic policies and protocols.
  • Performs required daily control logs for all in-house testing.
  • Operates and maintains all lab equipment and associated logs.
  • Educates and instructs patients on phlebotomy and lab test procedures.
  • Maintains and logs daily refrigerator, freezer, and room temperature controls.
  • Documents critical values and reports results to ordering provider per policy.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots problems with specimens, results, and equipment with contracted lab.
  • Maintains lab supplies and inventory.
  • Practices infection control policy with daily cleaning and sterilizing following OSHA and blood borne pathogens guidelines.
  • Tracks outstanding/incomplete lab orders for each provider on a weekly basis. Recalls patients for labs needing to be done or repeated.
  • Tracks and coordinates outside lab orders from specialists when appropriate for established patients.
  • Coordinates lab draws done off-site if needed due to tests not performed here or difficult sticks.
  • Successfully completes initial and biennial competency assessments and credentialing and privileging requirements.
  • Maintains lab lists/orders in EMR and through the online lab link.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Education, Training, and Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic computer and data entry skills.

Experience and Knowledge

  • One to two years of lab experience required.
  • Must have ability to handle confidential information on a need-to-know basis as defined by CCHC and HIPAA regulations.
  • Certification as a phlebotomist preferred

Initiative and Judgment

  • Requires the ability to work without direct supervision. The work is in a field where only general methods or policies are defined.
  • Initiates and acknowledges the need to develop, revise, update and change all applicable policies and procedures to Lab Supervisor or Medical Clinic Manager.

Working Conditions and Environment

  • Required to communicate with physicians, patients, families, caregivers and the Healthcare Team.
  • Successful performance of the essential functions of the position requires the following physical abilities:
  • Required to be able to write legibly and to read printed or handwritten materials.
  • Ability to communicate and respond effectively.
  • May need to appropriately respond to meet the urgent or emergent needs of the patient.
