Job Overview
Summary: Responsible for safely providing phlebotomy and lab services as outlined by Crescent Community Health Center (CCHC) policies and CLIA certified director. Will also be responsible for patient scheduling, monitoring of daily provider schedules and walk-ins, and making patient follow-up appointments.
Essential Duties: Essential job duties for this position include the following items. Other duties must be performed as assigned or required.
- Performs all job functions according to the mission and values of CCHC
- Collaborates with all members of the healthcare team including staff, patient, patient's family, and preferred provider
- Performs phlebotomy: venous and capillary draws on adults and children
- Performs blood, urine, and other applicable tests
- Collects labels and processes all lab orders and specimens (throat, nasal, urine, biopsy samples) according to proper lab protocol
- Ensures proper storage, handling, and transportation of all specimens to contracted lab(s)
- Communicates actively with courier for expedited labs
- Performs in-house lab testing in accordance with CLIA testing protocols
- Performs required daily control logs for all in-house testing
- Operates and maintains all lab equipment and associated logs
- Educates/instructs patients on phlebotomy and lab test procedures
- Maintains and logs daily refrigerator, freezer, and room temperature controls
- Schedules lab appointments as applicable
- Documents critical values and reports results to ordering provider per policy
- Identifies and troubleshoots problems concerning specimens, results, and equipment with contracted lab (UCL)
- Maintains lab supplies and inventory
- Practices infection control policy with daily cleaning and sterilizing following OSHA and blood borne pathogens guidelines
- Tracks outstanding/incomplete lab orders for each provider on a weekly basis and recalls patients for labs needing to be done or repeated.
- Answers telephone in a prompt, polite and helpful manner
- Returns phone calls to patients by end of business day of receiving the message
- Checks out patients and makes follow-up appointments as needed
- Asks the triage nurse for assistance with walk-in patients and difficult scheduling situations
- Places reminder calls to all medical patients at least one day prior to appointment
- Explains visit processes including items needed for appointment and other information necessary for visit
- Maintains a clean, organized, and safe environment for staff and patients
- Stay current with changing best practices and technologies.
- Uphold, support, and promote all company policies and procedures.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the individual in this position must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the minimum knowledge, skills and ability required.
Education/Experience:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent required
- Minimum of one year phlebotomist experience preferred
- One year or more experience in a medical office setting preferred
- Basic computer and data entry skills required
Language Skills:
- Communicate clearly, professionally, and respectfully with all patients and staff.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
If certified, completion of credentialing and privileging requirements.
Pre-employment drug testing, physical, review of required immunizations including COVID Vaccination and background check required.
