Position Summary:

The Director of Advising has primary responsibility for first-year students to assist them with selecting courses, exploring majors/careers, evaluating academic abilities, and understanding degree requirements. In addition to working with first-year students, he/she will also provide advising support for exploring students and other groups as needed. He/she will supervise two professional advisors in the Center for Advising.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Center for Advising and supervise professional and student staff
  • Create Fall semester schedules for new first-year student
  • Review and interpret placement and other standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites
  • Perform and interpret degree audits for students
  • Assist students with major/career planning
  • Advise Exploring students
  • Develop advising materials and presentations to support individual and group sessions
  • Collaborate with other academic advisors (faculty and program advisors such as Bridge, Honors, and TRIO) to ensure a uniform approach to academic advising campus-wide
  • Represent the Advising Center on Academic Affairs and other University-wide committees
  • Perform other duties in support of the University’s Mission

Position Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of University curriculum and of academic policies and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations with students, faculty and administration
  • Ability to relate to a culturally diverse university community
  • Ability to take initiative, follow through, and establish priorities and goals for the advising program
  • Must be detail oriented and keep accurate records of interactions with students
  • Computer skills (data entry, spreadsheet, word-processing, internet)

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field from an accredited university
  • Minimum of three years’ experience working in higher education
  • Knowledge and experience working with academic advising and major/career exploration in a university setting preferred
