Job Overview

The Aviation Department at the University of Dubuque is seeking a Director of Aviation Safety. The University of Dubuque offers a competitive wage and an excellent benefits package including tuition remission, paid holidays, vacation and sick time, and a retirement match.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Advocate for all stakeholders in compliance with safe operations
  • Implement and manage all aspects of the Safety Management Systems Voluntary Program (SMSVP), and actively promote the establishment of a just safety culture
  • Maintain an integrated safety program with tracking and analysis (ASAP/FOQA/FDM/NGAFID)
  • Ensure accessibility, actively engage with and provide guidance to the President, aviation leadership team, faculty, staff, and students to ensure safe operations
  • Interface routinely with all airport stakeholders and UD personnel to ensure safe practices for all Aviation Department operations
  • Assist with the management of the Aviation Department's drug and alcohol program
  • Engage in Aviation Department meetings and training or professional development activities
  • Organize and lead safety meetings and training or professional development for the aviation department as outlined in the SMS
  • Teach Aviation Safety Management and related courses
  • Engage in life-long learning and other educational opportunities to continuously enhance the aviation safety program
  • Perform other duties in support of the aviation department and the University's Mission

Skills and Abilities:

  • Broad operational knowledge and experience in the functions of the organization (e.g. training management, aircraft operations, air traffic management, aerodrome operations, and maintenance organization management)
  • Sound knowledge of safety management principles and practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relate to all levels, both inside and outside the organization
  • Good analytical skills
  • Leadership skills and an authoritative approach

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree in aviation safety, aviation management, aerospace, engineering, management, or other related fields is preferred
  • Proven experience in the Aviation environment
  • Proven knowledge of Aviation Legislation and FAA regulations
  • Proven exposure to Safety & Quality Assurance
  • General management -Budgeting, HR and Project Management
  • SMS or equivalent safety program training
  • Knowledge of OSHA and HAZMAT regulations and policies
  • Ability to pass an FAA/DOT drug test
  • Valid US driver's license
