Job Overview
To plan, purchase, and prepare food for students, staff, and guests. To ensure that the food choices available are nutritious and prepared according to all applicable rules, standards, and laws. To manage the food service operation in a manner that is fiscally sound. To train, supervise, and mentor cafeteria assistants and work study students assigned to the cafeteria.
1. Develop the monthly menu as to assure the availability of nutritious food.
2. Assist in the pricing of food items based on food services expenditures.
3. Purchase foods and supplies as needed and to minimize food waste.
4. Oversee and assist with food preparation.
5. Establish portion controls in relation to food pricing.
6. Supervise the food services cash register activities and process receipts to Business Office.
7. Supervise debit/credit card transactions as required.
8. Maintain a daily log of food service activities, numbers served, and popular items.
9. Monitor budget on a regular basis.
10. Supervise and assist with serving during scheduled meals.
11. Hire, schedule and train all cafeteria help. Supervise and evaluate their performance annually.
12. Maintain the food service area in accordance with state regulations (dishes, pans, etc.).
13. Supervise and assist in utensil and equipment washing in compliance with state regulations.
14. Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and food preparation areas in accordance with state regulations.
15. Offer a competitive catering service for internal college events.
16. Work collaboratively with other departments for college events.
17. Attend college meetings and serve on committees as requested.
18. Promote cafeteria services to college employees and students.
19. Work collaboratively with other departments for college events.
20. Report needed repairs of kitchen equipment to Provost office.
21. Must be willing to train and mentor college work study employees as needed.
22. Must be able to demonstrate effective practices of maintaining privacy and security of vendor, employee, and student information.
23. Demonstrate the values of the college through prompt and courteous service to college.
24. Assist in any other food service functions as deemed necessary.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Minimum of two years as a restaurant or institutional cook and/or food preparation experience.
Supervisory and budgetary experience in a restaurant or institutional kitchen.
Evidence of completion of Iowa Food Safety course.
