Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Student Health Nurse to join our team for the remainder of the current academic year. The Student Health Nurse contributes to the delivery of primary care for students by utilizing appropriate scientific theory and demonstrating clinically sound skills as a basis for making decisions within the realm of nursing practice specific to college health. The Student Health Nurse serves as a member of the health care team to manage the common health concerns of walk-in patients utilizing nursing protocols and by collaborating with and referring to the physician and nurse practitioners as indicated and preparing patients for exams by provider. Specific wellness and health education is demonstrated as a part of direct patient care and as outreach on campus.
This position is for the academic year, and is full-time benefit and paid leave eligible position. There is a possibility for continued employment, based on organizational needs.
Salary for this position is $2,500 every two weeks, through the end of the academic year, May 23, 2025.
Responsibilities:
- Provides care to individuals to ensure physical and mental well-being as defined by nursing protocol.
- Evaluates current care plans, completes assessments, develops specialized treatment plans, documents medical activity, and analyzes patient data and results to help diagnosis and treat illnesses and diseases.
- Collaborates and refers to physician and nurse practitioner when indicated.
- Coordinates care when indicated with on and off campus referral sources including emergency facilities, counseling, public health, lab and x-ray, private health care providers, and family planning.
- Keeps an accurate and complete patient record using EMR.
- Educates patients and their support systems on how to manage conditions and to promote the health and well-being of patients and those around them.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Participates in collaborative activities with the Student Health Services team by working in the clinic to prepare clients for exam by provider. This includes opening/setting up clinic in preparation for patients according to clinic protocol, setting up patients (rooming) patients according to protocol, and closing clinic according to protocol.
- Maintains current CPR certification and RN licensure in the State of Wisconsin or affiliated compact state.
- Completes tasks assigned that contribute to quality assurance of clinic. This includes providing telephone assessment, triage, and tracking inventory levels and place replenishment orders.
- Embraces and supports diversity as a part of the educational process. Acknowledges and respects the differences that race, culture, sexual orientation, age and gender bring to society and how that impacts on delivery of health and mental health care.
- This position may involve minimal work expectations outside of normal UW-Platteville office hours, e.g. night hours, weekend commitments, travel out of town, etc.
- The Student Health Nurse may develop and promote education activities to the community, peers, and/or students that will enhance health and wellness for the UW-Platteville student community.
- Participates in medical research as needed in collaboration with medical professionals and internal and external stakeholders
What You’ll Need to Succeed:
- Associate of Science in Nursing (AdN).
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Wisconsin or an affiliated compact state.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Skilled in providing direct care, conducting health assessments, and managing common illnesses and injuries.
- Proficient in handling medical emergencies, administering CPR, and delivering first aid.
- Basic knowledge of mental health issues common among college students (e.g., anxiety, depression) with the ability to provide initial support or referrals.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to educate individuals and groups on self-care, healthy habits, and illness prevention.
- Experienced in maintaining accurate and confidential health records using electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Knowledgeable in ensuring compliance with healthcare laws and campus policies (e.g., HIPAA).
