Job Overview
Description
Performs intermediate skilled work in the operation of various motorized equipment and performs general road and bridge maintenance and repair work. Responsible for
maintenance of territory and helps coordinate maintenance and improvement projects within territory (including, but not limited to blading roads, contract rock quantities and schedule, ditching, mowing, culvert replacements, signs, brush/tree cutting, snow trap repairs, roadway/ditch grading, pavement markings or related tasks as required). Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Roads Maintenance Superintendent, Assistant Roads Maintenance Superintendent, and County Engineer. Supervision may be exercised over maintenance workers.
Job Duties
- Act as responsible person in charge for County maintenance projects
- Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and the public
- Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials, and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy
- Responsible for proper upkeep of out shop for the territory
- Performs basic road maintenance and repair work on roads, bridges and buildings
- Performs carpentry work (including tools/hand tools) on bridges, buildings, drainage structures
- Operates various construction equipment skillfully
- Operates carpentry tools and hand tools
- Operates dump trucks and bucket trucks and small self-propelled construction equipment
- Lead worker in bridge construction and installation and placement of materials
- Directs operators in placement and lifting of bridge parts and materials and construction repair of drainage structures
- Pours and finishes concrete
- Performs basic painting, sand blasting, repair and maintenance assignments.
- Performs spot welding on bridges and guardrails
- Prepares and places proper signage (must follow SUDAS or IDOT standards) for projects and for general safety purposes
- May assist in planning and total construction of projects (as mentioned in description above)
- Operates equipment for snow removal (primarily Motor Grader), and may, when assigned, spreads salt and sand
- May be required to work out of classification to perform inspections on construction projects
- Responsible for inventory of tools, material, and equipment in territory
- Performs related tasks as required
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and one year of experience in the operation of medium to small equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License and maintain throughout duration of employment. Tanker Endorsement may be required.
- Must pass the prescribed pre-employment physical, drug test, and criminal background check.
- County Engineer may require employee to obtain and maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Iowa with specific endorsements.
Supplemental Information
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of: Principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related construction equipment and hand tools.
General knowledge of: The safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of trucks and related construction equipment in the work. Occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to: Follow plans, diagrams, specifications and directions related to structures and carpentry work. Make repairs and adjustments to equipment. To perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements: Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office or moderately loud when in the field. Work may routinely require the employee to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Work is performed under all weather conditions, often on busy streets or construction sites, involves extensive standing and walking and includes clearing brush, working in swamps, manholes and on difficult slopes.
