Job Overview
The Life Enrichment Supervisor is responsible for planning activities and programs that enrich residents’ quality of life. The Life Enrichment Supervisor oversees staff’s implementation of resident’s recreation programs and daily leisure activities in the Intermediate Care Facility/Intellectually disabled (ICF/ID) unit. Additionally, this position ensures that residents are involved in activities within the community. This position assists with both ICF-ID and NF resident activities. The core hours for this position are 12 pm – 8:30 pm.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Activity Planning:
Plans and creates activity calendars for the Sunrise Unit, consisting of Gemini day program, Heart’s Desires, 2nd shift evening activities, etc. Plans and implements some facility-wide activities including coordinating and managing Family & Friends Night. Schedules transportation for outings. Orders and maintains recreational equipment and supplies. Communicates with resident families, staff and other departments regarding upcoming special events. Schedules bands, volunteers, etc. for some resident activities. Applies for resident camp overseeing all camp arrangements.
Supervision/Quality Assurance/Education:
Trains and educates staff on resident programs and resident involvement (active treatment). Teaches Sunrise Positives Outcomes Training (behavior management) course to staff. Conducts formal and informal quality assurance checks on staff for proper implementation of resident recreation programs, service plans and daily group activities i.e. 1pm and 7pm. Ensures staff complete programming and active treatment within the unit and at offsite work location. Assists in behavior interventions and model appropriate de-escalation techniques.
Resident Money Management:
Fills out money request forms for the business office to prepare for outings and special activities. Online shopping for resident needs. Oversees resident gift cards. Reconciles accounts and turns in receipts with the business office. Obtains resident and staff signatures on all resident receipts. Oversees Sunrise resident petty cash fund.
Resident Programs/Life Plans:
Develops and writes resident recreation programs, Service Plans, Life Enrichment, Life Plan reports. Attends bi-annual Life Plan meetings for Sunrise residents. Monitors monthly data for specific resident recreation programs.
Resident Contact:
Daily contact with residents in 1:1 and group settings. Participates in activities with residents within and outside of the facility. Assists residents as needed throughout their day/evening. Provide resident care when needed at activities by assisting with special meal activities, feeding residents as needed, personal care on outings, etc.
Facility Purchasing:
Purchases/orders needed supplies for Sunrise Life Enrichment programming. Oversees Sunrise petty cash, provides input on Trustees annual budget for the Sunrise Unit.
Minimum Education Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Associate degree with course work in therapeutic recreation, social services, occupational therapy, human services, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience working with people with intellectual disabilities and/ or human services.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Must pass the prescribed pre-employment physical, abuse registry review, and criminal background check.
- Health care supervision and/or management experience desired.
- CNA certification, or obtainment of CNA certification within 6 months of employment
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
Comprehensive knowledge of:
- Federal and State regulations as related to the operations of SNFs, ICFs, and RCFs in the state of Iowa.
- Clinical standards and practices related to care and programming for individuals with complex physical, mental, and psychosocial care needs.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Maintain effective working relationships and interactions with facility staff, residents, and families.
- Analyze complex problems and effectively develop and implement plans to address.
- Use electronic clinical and management programs effectively.
- Use and operate a variety of basic office equipment (i.e. copiers, calculators, telephones, fax machines).
- Adept in use of Microsoft Windows, i.e. including Word, Publisher, and Excel

Physical Requirements
- Vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Effective verbal speaking and hearing abilities are needed to handle communications with staff, residents, and others.
- Requires pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance.
- Requires ability to walk steps, reaching, squatting, stooping, bending, and sitting, pushing, pulling, twisting, gripping and apply physical intervention holds.
Work Environment
- Work is primarily indoors, with occasional exposure to outside weather and conditions.
- Exposure to chemicals from cleaning compounds and exposure to bodily fluids require the use of personal protective equipment to safeguard against potential biological and chemical hazards.
- Some exposure to slippery surfaces when floors are wet.
