The advisor should be committed to student success and playing key roles in the University’s efforts of retaining students through quality advising practices. Specifically, Clarke University’s student academic advisors will:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for first-year students to provide both registration and ongoing holistic support.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Clarke University curriculum and academic policies. Advisors know and understand all academic requirements, including the general education requirements, major requirements, minor requirements, and any pre-professional program requirements.
  • Establish regular meeting times with their students while also being available for drop-in meetings with advisees as needed.
  • Communicate with advisees and meet with them on a regular basis.
  • Serve as a resource to all Clarke University students who drop in and seek support.
  • Refer students to other support offices such as Learning Support, Accessibility Services, Life Coach and Counseling, and Student Engagement, among others. Advisors know and understand the resources available to Clarke students and refer students.
  • Participate in the Clarke Student Support Network and reach out to students as needed.
  • When applicable, serve as a resource for the Academic Advising Committee and the institution’s faculty concerning best practices in holistic advising.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • A commitment to assisting students in their transition to higher education and to student success.
  • Experience in an educational setting in student academic advising, teaching, or a related area, such as counseling or customer service. Specific experience or training in academic advising is a plus.
  • A graduate degree (preferred) and/or experience in education.
  • Excellent verbal (written and oral) communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, organize, and maintain documentation of student encounters.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues from different areas of the institution, including Admissions, Student Engagement, and the faculty.
  • A working knowledge of best practices in student academic advising and a demonstrated willingness to maintain currency in this area.
