Job Overview
Description
Performs responsible unskilled and semiskilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates hand held equipment and trucks in connection with the semiskilled tasks to which assigned; does related work as required.
Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent.
Job Duties
- Performs basic road maintenance and repair work; prepares cuts, places, rakes and tamps asphalt; Directs truck drivers in the placement and dumping of materials;
- Assists with raising, placing and attaching bridge members;
- Directs equipment operators in lifting and placing bridge parts and materials; Pours and finishes concrete;
- Prepares and places barricades for maintenance project and safety purposes; Performs basic painting, repair and maintenance assignments;
- Mows grass, rakes and sweeps with hand tools and mower; Mixes and applies pesticides for use in the right-of-way; Assists in routine maintenance of equipment and vehicles;
- Operates dump truck, oil distributor, compressor, jack hammers, tamper and similar hand operated equipment;
- Performs general grounds maintenance and custodial work; Cleans ditches and drainage ways;
- Assists with the installation of culverts and other drainage facilities; Clears trees from rights-of-way;
- Runs errands as required, picks up parts and supplies; Performs general road, bridge maintenance duties as assigned; Operates snow removal trucks, spreads salt and sand;
- Operates front end loader to load materials on truck assigned; Attends schools of instruction and meetings as directed;
- May be required to work out of classification to perform inspections on construction projects if no employee whose job description includes performance of inspection is available;
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED and one year of experience as a laborer in the maintenance, repair and/or construction activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- County Engineer may require employee to obtain and maintain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License in Iowa with specific endorsements.
- Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License and maintain throughout duration of employment.
- Must pass the prescribed pre-employment physical, DOT drug test, and criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks in area to which assigned; general knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work; general knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned.
General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related light construction equipment; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill in the operation of several types of trucks; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to lift minimum 25 pounds; ability to climb steps; ability to squat, stoop; ability to be on feet for a minimum of one hour; ability to sit in same position for extended period of time; ability to reach above head; ability to withstand extremes of temperature, all with reasonable accommodation.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License valid in the State of Iowa;
