TITLE: Surgical Technician Lead
DEPARTMENT: Surgery
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Full-time 1.0 FTE (40 hours/week). Department hours are between 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Must be available to cover on-call shifts during PTO, FMLA, and staff illnesses. Call time is 30-minutes.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the surgical manager, the Surgical Technician Lead will oversee the work of the surgical technicians and central sterile personnel in promoting the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care as a member of the surgical team. Responsible for assisting with operative procedures and patient care according to departmental policies and procedures while adhering to high standards of care. He/she will participate in the performance appraisal process as a contributor and use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members. The Surgical Technician Lead is a resource person and a teacher. Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain a steady level of productivity. Is a self-starter. Is compatible, supportive, and a team player. Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as applicable. Displays an understanding of the surgery and prepares for any variations that may occur.

RESPONSIBILITES:
ΓÇó Assists department manager with delegation of assignments, orientation, education, scheduling, and staff training for Surgical Techs and Central Sterile staff.
ΓÇó Assists with and provides call coverage for staff illnesses, vacations, and leave of absences as needed.
ΓÇó Oversees Central Sterile processes and ensures safe instrument processing
ΓÇó Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements of Joint Commission, State Regulations, and department-specific requirements (ie. AAMI, AORN, AST)
ΓÇó Directly responsible for maintaining aseptic integrity throughout surgery including but not limited to organizing sterile field, opening sterile supplies, scrubbing, donning sterile gloves and gown and maintaining correct surgical counts per hospital policy.
ΓÇó Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon and surgical team by passing instrumentation, equipment, and supplies accurately and quickly
ΓÇó Assists RN with circulating duties as directed
ΓÇó Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens appropriately
ΓÇó Assists with cleaning and restocking the operating room before and after surgery. Making necessary preparations for subsequent procedures.
ΓÇó Prepares medications under the direct supervisor of circulating RN
ΓÇó Participates in ΓÇ£time outΓÇ¥ procedure according to hospital policy
ΓÇó Utilizes personal protective equipment
ΓÇó Demonstrates working knowledge of instrumentation and equipment. Follows instructions for use for cleaning and processing of instrumentation and equipment
ΓÇó Orders surgical supplies as needed
ΓÇó Demonstrates communication and leadership skills
ΓÇó Utilizes communication tools provided
ΓÇó Takes responsibility for self-development
ΓÇó Demonstrates strong, accurate decision-making capabilities
ΓÇó Performs other duties as assigned

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
ΓÇó Graduate of an accredited Operating Room/Surgical Technician program
ΓÇó Required: Basic life support
ΓÇó Required: Certified Surgical Technician
ΓÇó Certified registered central service technician (CRCST) or willingness to obtain within 2 years of employment
ΓÇó Preferred: Hold current certified operating room technician license for a minimum of 5 years
ΓÇó Leadership experience or willingness to attend leadership classes
