The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) may provide quality patient care in the MercyOne Medical Center Dyersville Emergency Department and MercyOne patient settings. The ARNP works collaboratively with primary care physicians. The duties of the ARNP cannot be rigidly defined, but the following description characterizes common expectations of the position. The primary responsibilities should not be interpreted to prohibit functions not specifically identified.
Key Working Relationships: Nurses, CNAs, Patient/family/community populations, physicians, hospital staff, other health care providers and community service providers.
Primary Customer Groups: Patient/ family/ community populations, agencies with which MercyOne has contractual relationships for provision of services, pharmacists, vendors, hospital staff and departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment so as to foster a positive public image for MercyOne Medical Center. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information (i.e., HIPAA, Stark, etc.). Practices within the legal scope of a Licensed Independent Practitioner as allowed by the laws in the state of Iowa in conjunction with their training and experience. Exercise clinical privileges specifically granted to him/her based on their training, experience, ethics, and demonstrated competence and judgement. Participate in the development, execution, and periodic review of written policies governing the services provided at MercyOne Medical Center- Dyersville. Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment so as to foster a positive public image for MercyOne Medical Center. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety, and medical information (i.e., HIPAA, Stark, etc.) Carries out the MercyOne Medical Center Mission & Values and the MercyOne Vision for Patient Care Services. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice standards in the delivery of patient care Continuously seeks out opportunities to improve the quality of patient care delivery through innovative and creative problem solving. Supports and participates in shared leadership and interdisciplinary decision-making. Participates and demonstrates leadership in the quality initiatives of the hospital. Demonstrates ethical conduct and practice consistent with the Code of Ethics for Nurses. Contributes to the positive image of nursing and enhance the Magnet culture of the organization by modeling professional behavior both in the organization and in the community. Serves as a teacher, mentor, and coach to patients and entire patient care team. Embraces change and lifelong learning, taking personal accountability to seek out experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competence in clinical practice and role performance. Provides competent age-appropriate patient care to the above indicated patient populations by conducting comprehensive or episodic health assessments to include:
- Obtaining and interpreting appropriate data
- Demonstrating critical thinking and diagnostic skills in ordering screening or diagnostic tests or procedures
- Develops and analyzes differential diagnoses that are based on clinical and laboratory data.
- Prescribing medications or treatments appropriate to the diagnosis in accordance with professional standards
- Instructs and counsels patients regarding physical and mental health and health promotion.
Communicates appropriately with collaborating/supervising physicians, other health care professionals, patients, and families. Provides immediate evaluation and treatment for emergency medical problems, instituting necessary procedures and directing emergency personnel in care and transport of the patient. Documents clearly, consistently, in a timely manner all patient care activities and follow-up care. Codes appropriately, based on the documentation and established standards. Refers patients appropriately to specialists as needed. Is knowledgeable about and appropriately utilizes community services, agencies and resources for patients and their families. Directs hospital staff in the provision and execution of medical care. Assures quality patient care by appropriate monitoring and evaluation and participation in quality improvement activities. May participate in the formal governance process of MercyOne Medical Center- Dyersville. Is willing to participate in committees as requested by the Director of MercyOne Medical Center- Dyersville. Participates in the activities of MercyOne Medical Center-Dyersville, included but not limited to the Critical Access Hospital (CAH) QI Committee, CAH Medical Staffing Committee, and CAH Professional Activities Committee. Participates with physician in periodic review of patient medical records. Participates in and assists in the development of staff educational in-service meetings and promotes the application of new knowledge relevant to the clinic and/or hospital. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Performs other responsibilities as requested by the Director of MercyOne Medical Center- Dyersville Promotes and provides education on health and wellness to patients, families, and the community. Maintains and enhances a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice as well as continuing education requirements necessary for licensure. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPAA regulations. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
A. Education:
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Graduate of a Master of Nursing program. Successful completion of certification. Current licensure in the state of Iowa as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
B. Experience
Demonstrated competency as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner through previous experience is preferred.
C. Special Skills, Competencies & Aptitudes
Board eligible or certified MercyOne Medical Center-Dyersville privileges Excellent verbal and written skills are required, including ability to work with a team.
Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Healthcare Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and every 2 years thereafter to maintain current status.
Completes Mandatory Reporting: Child and Dependent Adult Abuse requirement within 6 months of hire and renews this requirement every 5 years.
Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes MANDT Training within 12 months of hire and maintains current status.
Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS
A. Must be able to physically assist with patient care activities.
B. Must be able to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods throughout the day.
C. Must be flexible since the position is subject to interruptions and changes in work priorities.
D. Occasional exposure to hazardous/toxic substances, communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and other infectious waste.
E. Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
