Under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist, the inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists in preparing and distributing sterile and non-sterile medications. The Technician must be skilled in all functions of the department that do not require the professional judgment or activity of the Pharmacist.

Responsibilities
Operational Functions
- Prepares and distributes medication products to fulfill medication orders.
- Ensures appropriate and adequate medication inventory by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, repackaging medications, and ordering supplies.
- Answers the telephone and directs calls to appropriate personnel in a professional and courteous manner.
- Accurately compounds sterile and non-sterile products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, in accordance with facility, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Performs patient billing in the electronic medical record.
- Ensures proper medication storage.
- Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department.

- Ensures the appropriate preparation and dispersal of medications in accordance with facility, state, and national laws and regulations.
- Prioritizes the importance of preventing errors, accidents, and infections within the workplace and reports potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Completes all competency and skills assessment requirements.
- Participates in and completes pharmacy technician orientation.
Basic UPH Performance Criteria

- Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.
- Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.
- Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.
- Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
- Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Experience:

At least one (1) year of hospital or retail pharmacy experience. |
License(s)/Certification(s):

· Registration in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy · Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. |
