SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:

The Child Development Teacher plans curriculum and organizes daily activities to provide developmentally appropriate care for children 18 months to 12  years. 

Customers include: children, parents, co-workers, volunteers, and visitors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Demonstrates specific customer focused behaviors relating to attitude, privacy/confidentiality, communication skills, and professional behavior. Prepares a creative well-balanced curriculum that includes a wide range of developmentally appropriate experiences for the children.  Promotes self-help skills, social skills, and good hygiene habits in children. Recognizes and attempts to meet the emotional, social, physical, and intellectual needs of the children.  Treats all children with respect. Maintains the health, safety, and cleanliness of the Center’s indoor and outdoor environment with regard to the children’s health and safety. Communicates with team members, parents, children, students, volunteers and the community in order to coordinate the activities of aides and provide appropriate information to parents and team members. Demonstrates the willingness to discuss and work out problems with parents and peers as they arise. Demonstrates ability to communicate with parents about children’s needs, development, and issues. Expresses ideas clearly with appropriate standard English in writing and speaking. Creates an environment which is interesting and challenging to the child.  Demonstrates an understanding of Iowa Department of Human Services licensing regulations. Exhibits a willingness to take on new responsibilities and related duties as needed. Demonstrates knowledge of positive reinforcement and redirection as behavior modification techniques. Performs job by Citizenship Standards.

Performs other related duties as assigned and provides the flexibility necessary to carry out departmental goals and objectives. Seeks the majority of continuing education requirements in areas that will be most beneficial to their department and this employee. Strives for individual performance excellence within the job in order to help the department achieve its goals.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must have good communication skills. Must enjoy and be patient with children. Must demonstrate behaviors that enhance the perception of Mercy Medical Center in the community. Must have tolerance for noise. Must have the ability to write lesson plans. Must have good planning, organizational, and instructional skills. Must be able to accompany the children on outside field trips. Must earn 6 hours of continuing education in Early Childhood Education per year. Must practice good hygiene techniques. Must be flexible. Must have fundamental knowledge of the growth, development and discipline of children six weeks to twelve years with special emphasis on the preschool and school age child.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

In an eight hour day, employee must sit approximately 4 hours, stand 2 hours and walk 2 hours. Job requires continuous (80% or more of work time) bending, stooping, crouching, and kneeling; frequent (21%-50% of work time) crawling and reaching; occasional (6%-10% of work time) balancing, pushing and pulling. Job requires the ability to occasionally (21%-50% of work time) lift and carry objects weighing 75 lbs. Job requires the use of hands for repetitive action such as simple grasping, firm grasping and fine manipulating. Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level. Must be able to speak. Must be able to hear speech.

                                                                                                                                                                        MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Two year or four year degree in Early Childhood Education or elementary experience desired. Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter. Experience desired, but not required.
