Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse (RN) at our A New Day Clinic will be a crucial part of a multidisciplinary team for  providing care for individuals experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises. The RN will perform on-site assessments, administer medications, and work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team at A New Day Clinic, other Hillcrest Family Services programs, and/or provide referrals to other services within the community to stabilize individuals outside of a traditional hospital setting. This role requires strong clinical judgement, crisis intervention skills, and a compassionate approach to care. Addition. you will:

  • Perform assessments of patients presenting with mental health or substance use crises.
  • Evaluate medical and psychological needs, including the assessment of risk factors such as suicide, self-harm, or withdrawal symptoms.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team members at the A New Day Clinic to determine the more appropriate interventions and care plans.
  • Provide immediate crisis intervention, de-escalation, and support for patients in distress.
  • Administer medications as prescribed and monitor the effects, adjusting as necessary under the direction of a physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Assist in developing individualized care plans aimed at stabilizing patients in a short-term setting.
  • Work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, and case managers to develop and implement treatment plans.
  • Coordinate with external agencies such as law enforcement, emergency medical services, and community mental health resources when needed.
  • Communicate effectively with families and caregivers, providing updates on the patient’s status and treatment plan as allowed per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Communicates effectively with clients, family, treatment team, and community agencies and facilitates resolution of issues that could impact continuity of care.
  • Provide patients and families with education on medications, treatment plans, and recovery resources.
  • Advocate for patients need to ensure that each individual receives compassionate, trauma-informed care.
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA guidelines.
  • Follow protocols for the management of controlled substances, infection control, and emergency procedures.
  • Conduct HIV/STD screening as necessary; perform point of care testing, as indicated; label specimens per Hillcrest Family Services policies and procedures; perform phlebotomy/blood draws as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

 

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with an associate or bachelor’s in science as a Registered Nurse.

Experience:

  • One or more years of nursing experience, preferably in psychiatric nursing, emergency nursing, or substance use treatment.
  • Knowledge of psychotropic medications, DSM-IV diagnoses, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Knowledge of physical health disorders.

 

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Solid assessment, clinical, and documentation skills.
  • Patient Orientated.
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Highly organized.
  • Excellent de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Licensures/Certifications

  • Valid licensure in the state of Iowa as an Registered Nurse.
  • Iowa Mandatory Reporter certification Dependent Adult and Dependent Child – or ability to obtain within 4 months of employment.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to meet Hillcrest Family Services agency driving requirements.
