Description:

The Retail Pharmacist accepts the responsibility and accountability for the accurate control of and appropriate dispensing of all prescription and non-prescription medications. Ensures appropriate counseling of patients regarding their medications. 

 

SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER: 

Reports to the Lead Pharmacist or in their absence, the Retail Pharmacy Supervisor. Responsible for supervision of the pharmacy technicians and other support personnel.  

 

Patients served range in age from newborns to geriatrics. Customers include patients, family and caregivers, and other health care providers.  

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Adheres to the principles of caring and expected behaviors outlined in MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center's Model of Caring and Trinity Health's Code of Conduct, fostering a climate where all customers are treated in a manner consistent with MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center's Mission and Values. 

Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior. 

Accepts responsibility for the timely and accurate preparation of medications and pharmaceutical supplies, using accepted procedures to fulfill prescription orders issued by physicians, dentists, and other qualified providers 

Communicates effectively with colleagues and customers alike, being a good listener and adjusting style as needed 

Represents MercyOne Pharmacies in a courteous, friendly, and caring manner 

Performs duties with flexibility, adapting to changing schedules and needs of the customers, prioritizing workload accordingly 

Counsels’ patients receiving prescription medications, non-prescription medications, devices and supplies, as appropriate while protecting their health and drug information. 

Provides information to medical staff concerning all aspects of clinical pharmaceutical  

information pertaining to the patients care and well-being, keeping in mind the 

confidential nature of such information and communication.   

Monitors patient medication therapy for pharmaceutical care parameters and documents (as  

 required) the appropriate findings, recommendations, interventions and outcomes.    

Maintains positive behaviors, approaches, attitude, and commitment to interpersonal service    toward patients, visitors, customers and co-workers.   

Assists in the development of policies and procedures related to pharmaceutical services 

Shares in the “on-call” and weekend rotation responsibilities.  

Adheres to all state and federal laws surrounding the appropriate security and control of and dispensing of medications. 

Assists in training and continued development of technicians, pharmacy support staff, pharmacy residents, students and interns. 

Assists in inventory maintenance, ensuring appropriate inventory levels, ordering, and security of inventory including CII perpetual inventory logs and yearly inventory counts. 

Actively participates in quality and problem-solving activities with other pharmacy staff and other hospital departments. 

Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. 

Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. 

Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs. 

Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.  Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.  

Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, team lead or pharmacy director. 

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:  

Maintains a professional, collaborative work environment to foster a positive public image for MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.   

Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information (i.e. HIPAA, Stark, etc.). 

Must be able to effectively supervise technical staff. 

Must be accurate and thorough in performing job functions. 

Must perform all functions in a timely fashion to optimize patient care. 

Must demonstrate an ability to exercise professional judgment in decisions relating to medication therapy. 

Must possess the ability to effectively and courteously communicate with other members of the pharmacy, medical and hospital staffs and guests and clients. 

Must be competent to provide care within assigned unit to the population described in the unit's description of service. 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

In an 8-hour day, employee may stand and/or walk 6-8 hours. 

Mobility, dexterity, fine motor skills and ability to use hands in repetitive motion tasks such as grasping and fine manipulating is required. 

Frequent (21%-50% of work time) bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and pushing and pulling. 

Occasional (6%-10% of work time) lifting and carrying of objects weighing 35 lbs. or less. 

Occasional (6%-10% of work time) squatting, climbing 2 feet and balancing. 

Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level. 

Must be able to speak and hear speech. 

Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:  

Completion of the requirements for a B.S. or PharmD in Pharmacy at an accredited college of pharmacy is required. 

A current State of Iowa Pharmacist license.   

Maintenance of continuing education credits every 2 years as required by the Iowa State Board of Pharmacy. 

Previous practical experience in a retail or ambulatory care pharmacy is preferred. 

Certification in Immunization Administration is preferred. 

Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training is required within 6 months of hire and every 5 years thereafter.
