Overview

Staff in our Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) care for and monitor patients as they recover from the effects of anesthesia. This includes all aspects of patient care following surgery.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health within the structure of the Professional Nurse Practice Model and in collaboration with other care givers. Collaborates with physicians and other health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the postoperative plan of care for the surgical patient.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

  • Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
  • Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
  • Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
  • Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical skills of the specialty required on assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Utilizes holistic approach (considering biopsychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
  • Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.

Clinical Excellence and Patient Education

  • Assess and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
  • Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

Graduate of accredited nursing program

(Must obtain Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) within 5 years of hire)

BSN in Nursing

Experience:

12 months of hospital clinical experience or demonstrated clinical efficiency.

Preferred critical care experience.

License(s)/Certification(s):

· Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

· Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within six (6) months from date of hire.

· Basic cardiac monitoring within three (3) months

· Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within six (6) months and

· Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Recognition, and Stabilization (PALS) certification within six (6) months,

· Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Specialty certification

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

· Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

· Multicultural sensitivity.

· Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.

· Customer/patient focused.

· Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.

  • FTE/Hours per pay period: .01;
  • Department: PACU;
  • Shift: PRN, as needed. Hours will vary between: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm and 10:30 am - 7:00 pm.;
