Description:

Consistent with the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, the registered professional nurse first assistant (RNFA) is a member of the Mercy Medical Center healthcare team and is accountable for the delivery of holistic, compassionate, individualized, and effective patient care demonstrated by the use of the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation. In addition, the RNFA is responsible for behaviors consistent with the professional nursing role, appropriate to their education and experience, including activities related to quality of care, performance appraisal, education, collegiality, ethics, collaboration, research and evidence-based practice, and resource utilization. The RNFA will follow the clinical practice guidelines as defined by the Association of Peri Operating Room Nurses, as well as, regulatory bodies.

REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL NURSE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Preoperatively assesses the patient.

  • Assists with positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.

  • Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels, and by other means as directed and supervised by the surgeon.

  • Provides exposure through the appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques.

  • Handles tissue as directed by the surgeon.

  • Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon; suture fascia, subcutaneous tissue and skin.

  • Placement and suturing of drains as directed by the surgeon.

  • Applies surgical dressings, application of casts, splints or immobilizing devices.

  • Assists with transferring the patient from the operating room.

  • Performs duties under the supervision of the surgeon physically present in the surgery department, excluding skin closure.

  • Maintains current continuing education relative to practice.

  • Participates in quality assurance monitoring as indicated.

  • The Registered Nurse First Assistant will follow the clinical practice guidelines as defined by the Association of PeriOperating Room Nurses, as well as, regulatory bodies.

  • Any other task delegated by the surgeon within the scope of practice of the RNFA.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • A baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing is required Successful completion of course in RN First Assisting based on the AORN core curriculum for the RNFA as its foundation or enrolled in RN First Assisting course with suture certification training completed and/or vein harvesting training completed.

  • Active License as a Registered Nurse in the State of Iowa.

  • Certified in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR) prior to completion of RNFA program.

  • Proficient in perioperative nursing practice as either scrub or circulator nurse for three to five years.

  • Current ACLS certification.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.

  • Recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate corrective and/or preventative action.

  • Ability to perform in stressful or emergency situations.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique related to procedures in which the RNFA assists.

  • Certified as RN First Assistant within four years of course completion (CRNFA).

  • Articulates and demonstrates commitment to the philosophy, values, mission and vision of MMC.

  • Membership in an appropriate professional nursing organization is recommended.
