About the Program
The School-Based Youth Services Program provides brain health services directly to students within the school setting during regular school hours. Students are referred by school counselors. School based social emotional behavior counselors work in collaboration with school faculty, as well as parents or guardians to coordinate care and treatment of the student. Services are provided throughout multiple schools within the Dubuque Community School District. These services include:
- Outpatient brain health services within the school setting
- Screening, assessment, and diagnosis
- Patient-centered treatment planning
- Referring to additional community resources and services when needed
Your Responsibilities
As a School-Based Therapist, you will provide therapy to children, age (5-17), within the school setting to promote optimum brain health, as well as improve social and educational functioning. As a counselor you will utilize your unique skills and Evidence Based and/or Evidence Researched treatment modalities to meet the needs of the student that was referred for services. Responsibilities will also include:
- Completing an initial assessment, diagnostic summary, and other assessments as required
- Developing a person-centered treatment plan
- Completing progress notes within 24 hours of service delivery
- Discharge planning and make referrals for additional services as needed
- Collaborating with other professionals involved with clients, when appropriate

What You Need
- Masters degree in counseling, social work or closely related field
- Iowa licensed to practice or eligible and willing to become licensed as a Mental Health Counselor or Independent Social Worker
- Effective counseling and diagnosing skills, and a proficient knowledge of the impact of trauma
- Proficiency in time management and EHR documentation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work cooperatively with staff and other service providers and interface effectively, sensitively with students/families
- Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age and diagnosis of students served
- Highly professional presentation and manner consistent with school standards and Hillcrest policies
- Ability to assist school staff to identify effective strategies to de-escalate or avoid triggering a student
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position
- Willingness to drive to different locations within the community
