McGraw Hill, a leading provider of digital and print educational resources, is seeking a Science Writer/Editor (Grades 2–12) to join our content development team. This dynamic role blends writing and developmental editing to create engaging, scientifically accurate articles designed to spark curiosity and improve reading comprehension for students across grades 2–12. The position emphasizes crafting differentiated content that supports measurable literacy growth through leveled materials spanning 12 Lexile levels. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in science and education, a passion for making complex topics accessible and exciting, and the ability to collaborate across teams to deliver high-quality materials.

As part of McGraw Hill/Achieve3000 Literacy’s mission to enhance literacy growth, the Science Writer/Editor will play a pivotal role in developing materials that inspire curiosity, foster deeper reading comprehension, and build essential scientific knowledge. This position requires a self-motivated individual with exceptional organizational skills, strong interpersonal communication abilities, and a commitment to excellence. This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States.

What you will be doing:   

  • Write high-interest, engaging articles that include science concepts to support building background knowledge and reading comprehension for students in grades 2–12 (Areas include: inquiry, science, physical science, earth and space science, and engineering design).
  • Pitch ideas, research, outline, and develop articles using current science concepts, discoveries, and real-world examples
  • Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum Development, writers, editors, and digital content managers to align with content goals and development standards.
  • Level articles to 12 differentiated reading levels while preserving key concepts, scientific accuracy, clarity, and engagement.
  • Support fact-checking, review, and revision of content to ensure for scientific accuracy and pedagogical integrity in self-written articles and other writers’ work.
  • Ensure alignment with national/state science standards, company guidelines, and best practices around content creation, sensitivity, bias, and inclusion.
  • Deliver and respond to recommendations and improvements based on editorial feedback.
  • Razor-sharp editing of high-interest feature articles and accompanying test items for grades 2–12.
  • Edit content for organization, consistency, accuracy, flow, and engagement, ensuring content meets rigorous editorial and instructional standards.
  • Provide actionable feedback to writers during the pitch and editing process and collaborate on revising content for stronger narrative or conceptual cohesion.
  • Ensure all content meets our high standards of editorial and instructional excellence, with focus on quality, engagement, and classroom sensitivity.
  • Collaborate with editorial staff, writers, and other team members to initiate ideas and solutions, anticipate and resolve problems, and ensure excellent results.
  • Organize and complete assignments that align with curricular goals and support production workflow, meeting rigorous deadlines and adhering to Agile systems.

 

We’re looking for someone with: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a scientific discipline, science education, journalism, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in educational publishing, science writing, or developmental editing; teaching experience in science or literacy a plus.
  • Experience in curriculum development or instructional design.
  • Passion for creating engaging content for diverse reading levels.
  • Strong knowledge of science across grade levels and domains.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with a demonstrated ability to simplify complex concepts for students in grades 2-12.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit differentiated or leveled content.
  • Experience developing aligned comprehension questions to support reading skills and Lexile growth.
  • Thrives in a collaborative, feedback-rich environment and meets deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office tools; familiarity working in Agile systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of text complexity frameworks (e.g., Lexile leveling).
  • Familiarity with NGSS, Common Core, or other national/state standards.

The pay range for this position is between $62,000 – $85,000 annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
