Job Overview

The individual in this position reports to the Distribution Manager and is responsible for supervising and monitoring LTL operations. This is a safety-sensitive position because it is a hands-on supervisory role. This person uses forklifts such as sit-down, stand-up, and cherry pickers. They also use saws, pneumatic staplers and nailers, handle hazardous materials, operate banders, hoists, lifting equipment, and pallet jacks, and use electronic carousels and compactors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare formal written instructions for LTL, truckload, or other shipping operations. Train new employees on all shifts to package orders for shipment by LTL, Hotshot, or truckload, following standard packaging instructions.
  • Manage daily fulfillment operations, ensuring all orders ship on time for same-day delivery.
  • Participate in the staffing process, including interviewing applicants, conducting annual evaluations, and reviewing full-time employees at their 60-day probation period.
  • Improve the packaging process and reduce costs by identifying inventory and shipping issues.
  • Propose efficiency improvements in LTL operations, such as plans to expedite order loading and improve labor-to-shipping ratios.
  • Supervise the loading of LTL trailers.
  • Monitor shipping supply levels and inform the Distribution Manager of ordering needs.
  • Organize and maintain miscellaneous shipping supplies.
  • Train employees in filling cable orders and facilitating production in the cable rolling area. Suggest improvements in cable production and inventory maintenance.
  • Work with employees who have work limitations.
  • Ensure all box flaps are removed, pallets are picked up, refuse is cleaned from the floor around saws and shelves, and empty boxes are recycled.
  • Propose warehouse improvements. For all proposals over $200, determine the nature of the problem, what is needed to solve it, and how the proposed solution provides benefits. Identify necessary equipment, total costs (including installation), and determine advantages, disadvantages, and potential cost savings.
  • Understand department metrics and overall goals of the LTL area and communicate these objectives to team members to achieve results.
  • Serve as backup for the Distribution Manager when directed by management.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of warehouse experience.
  • Forklift Certification or ability to complete certification.

Language Skills: Communicates effectively for the job. Reads and interprets safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of customers or employees.

Mathematical Skills: Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Computes rate, ratio, and percent, and draws and interprets bar graphs.

Computer Skills: Uses Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Reasoning Ability: Applies common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deals with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly stands, walks, uses hands, reaches with hands and arms, climbs or balances, and stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls. The employee frequently communicates and listens to co-workers and occasionally sits. The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. The job also requires various carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crawling, and squatting activities.

Additional Training: Participates in continuous training in warehouse and safety procedures and completes certification in the operation of heavy equipment as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
