Job Overview

Performs intermediate paraprofessional work in the coordination of victim-witness program; does related work as required.

Work is performed under the regular supervision of the County Attorney.

Examples of Duties

  • Develops procedures for informing the public and potential victims of the program.
  • Identifies and registers victims in pending cases, mails notification letters and processes registrations as mandated by the Iowa Victim and Witness Protection Act.
  • Provides assistance for victims in criminal justice process; provides referrals for supportive and crisis intervention services.
  • Assists prosecutors with preparation of court proceedings, no-contact order, damages, restitution, etc.
  • Develops, implements and provides training programs for service providers, law enforcement agencies and victim oriented programs; does public speaking on victims' issues.
  • Develops and prepares grant requests, maintains grant records.
  • Interviews and prepares victims and witnesses.
  • Serves as a liaison between victims, witnesses and the criminal justice system.
  • Monitors victim-related court processes.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Coordinates program activities with volunteer services and related agencies.
  • Creates and secures County Attorney subpoenas.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field and experience in interviewing and counseling, administration and writing grants, and a working knowledge of the criminal justice system or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must pass the pre-employment criminal background check.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of interviewing techniques and human behavior; general knowledge of criminal justice system; ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Court officials, State and local law enforcement officials, members of the bar, employees and the public; ability to prepare concise written reports.
