Requirements
- Must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Previous medical billing experience, including knowledge of hospital and professional claim forms preferred
- Minimum 6 months experience in office setting with experience answering multi-line phone preferred
- Good understanding of medical terminology preferred
- Previous experience with health insurance, collection techniques, or patient registration preferred
- Basic data entry skills required as well as proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel with ability to create daily and monthly logs, summary reports, simple formulas and design of worksheets
- Patient advocate who is caring and pays attention to detail
Work Hours
We are seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Patient Financial Counselor to work Monday- Friday, 7:30am- 4:00pm.
Job Summary
The Patient Financial Counselor helps patients understand their medical bills and payment options. They work within Epic (our billing system) to respond to any billing questions from patients. If a patient has concerns, they can also meet with them in person to provide assistance.
The counselor works closely with the Insurance Billing team to resolve any billing issues that come up. In addition to explaining payment plans and financial assistance programs, the counselor actively assists patients in applying for financial assistance, including contacting Medicaid or other programs on their behalf when needed.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

- Help patients get the proper information to apply for financial assistance.
- Be able to set up patients on payment plans, if needed.
- Meet with patients face to face to discuss concerns or questions.
- Answers incoming work que questions and resolve patient concerns within 24 hours of the message.
- Call patients on past due help account balances in an effort to close out those accounts timely.
- Reconcile payment plans and work accounts to get them current also communicate non payments to manager.
- Reconcile Americollect monthly reports and correct accounts accordingly.
- Process outgoing and incoming mail daily.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
- Adheres to Southwest Health’s value-based behavior standards.
- Understands and adheres to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
