Work Hours

We are seeking a part-time (24 hours/week) RN to work in our Float Pool. This position works day shift, Thursdays and Fridays from 5:00am-5:30pm. Float pool RN's help in the ER, Med/Surg and Birth Center.

Job Summary

Provides nursing care and service in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, current laws and regulations and under the direction of medical staff.  Follows the individualized plan of care for each patient in order to achieve the highest practicable level of physical and mental well-being for each patient in compliance with current nursing standards of care and practice and medical standards of care, federal, state regulations, and Southwest Health policy and procedure.  Utilizes the nursing process in the execution of general nursing procedures in the maintenance of health, prevention of illness or care of the ill through the performance of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  1. Provide direct patient care.
  2. Transfer patients between bed, chairs, commode, and transfer devices.
  3. Position patient/equipment, monitor and assess vitals, perform dressing, change linens, and assist with bathing.
  4. Perform all required paperwork and communicate with patient care staff, patients, and families.
  5. Operate computer and communication devices.
  6. Prepare and set up ancillary equipment.
  7. Dispense medications, hang IVs, and retrieve/store supplies.
  8. Provide patient care in urgent/emergent situations.
  9. Perform CPR on patients during code before arrival of additional team members.
  10. Set goals, priorities for the care and treatment of each patient and continually evaluates the progress toward specific goals; making modifications to the plan of care assuring that the plan is always current, and documents progress of goal in nursing notes by the end of each shift.
  11. Implement the planned interventions specific to each patient following the individual patient plan of care.
  12. Carry out the interventions in person or delegates to appropriate personnel.
  13. Consult with the physician/surgeon and recognize when a delegated act may harm a patient.
  14. Develops and make revisions to the patient plan of care upon admission, and throughout the stay of each patient, as the needs of the patient changes.
  15. Identify change in condition and immediately respond by instituting the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  16. Reinforce the teaching provided by physician/surgeon and provides basic health care instructions to patients and documents such.
  17. Participate with other health team members in meeting the patient needs.
  18. Administer prescribed medications as per the orders of the physician. Monitor for effectiveness, documents intervention results within 1 hour of intervention.
  19. Provide progress reports to physician/surgeon as needed to make necessary changes to patient plan of care.
  20. Notify patient, family and/or POA-HC, guardian, and physician of changes in condition.
  21. Immediately investigate injuries of unknown origin, allegations of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation according to policy guidelines.
  22. Notify Department Manager or Director, as needed and as per protocol regarding patient care issues.
  23. Ensure competency of job assignments by attending all staff meetings (or obtaining and reading meeting minutes and completing the post meeting questionnaire/quiz), mandatory meetings, continuing education, special meetings, and completing competency tasks as assigned by the Department Manager/ Director or designee.
  24. Adhere to Southwest Health’s value-based behavior standards.
  25. Understand and adhere to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
  26. Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested or required.
  27. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic test to identify and assess patient’s condition
  28. Instruct individuals, families, or other groups on topics such as health education, disease prevention, medication side effects, or discharge instruction; documents in nursing note by the end of each shift the education and teach back.

Medical Surgical

  • Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, and documentation
  • Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends and developments in the medical-surgical nursing realm
  • Participates in on-going quality initiatives
  • Provides patient comfort by participating in Hourly Rounding with a Purpose, transporting patients, answering call lights and requests; with documentation of hourly rounding.
  • Uses nursing process to provide all levels of patient care
  • Completes admission process and required documentation within a timely manner
  • Utilize critical thinking skills when assessing and performing interventions in patient care
  • Initiates medical emergency response team on own and in conjunction with the house supervisor
  • Assists with departmental checklists for the current day and month
  • Assist with staffing in times of influx
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; attending staff meetings on a regular basis attendance or calling into the meeting with ( obtaining and reading meeting minutes and completing the post meeting questionnaire/quiz within the month of assignment.), special meetings, and completing competency tasks as assigned by the department manager(s). PRN staff are encouraged to attend meetings but will be held to or obtaining and reading meeting minutes and completing the post meting questionnaire/quiz), special meetings, and completing competency tasks as assigned within the month of assignment.
  • Care for specimens and cultures per SH policy
  • Proactively seeks recertification prior to expiration
  • Performs shift assessment on all patients assigned to staff member
  • Preps patients for OR procedures
  • Recovers patients from surgery including emergency surgeries and properly documents
  • Assists and takes care of patients from the infusion clinic after hours and properly documents
  • Places charges appropriately for each patient by the end of each shift

Emergency

  • Complete triage in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills especially during stressful situations.
  • Perform Advanced Trauma and Cardiac Assessments.
  • Initiate Medical Emergency process without supervision.

 

Birth Center

The Birth Center Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive, family-centered nursing care to patients in the antenatal, labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum, and mother-baby (newborn) phases.

  • Assess and monitor maternal and fetal well-being in the antepartum period.
  • Performs and documents fetal heart monitoring (non-stress tests)
  • Perform ongoing maternal and fetal assessments during labor.
  • Provide emotional and physical support to laboring patients and families.
  • Administer medications, IV fluids, and labor interventions as per provider orders.
  • Assist with vaginal and cesarean births, ensuring a safe and positive experience.
  • Monitor for and respond to obstetric emergencies.
  • Assess and support maternal recovery following birth.
  • Educate patients on postpartum care, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
  • Monitor for postpartum complications and escalate care as needed.
  • Perform initial newborn assessments, including APGAR scoring and vital signs.
  • Support early breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact.
  • Provide routine newborn care, screenings, and education for families.
  • Performs neonatal resuscitation within scope of practice.
