Work Hours
We are seeking a Laboratory Intern for a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position running from June 2026 through May 2027. This non-benefit-eligible role will work full-time hours (36 hours per week) during June, July, and August 2026, generally between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Beginning in September 2026 through May 2027, the position transitions to part-time hours, working every third weekend, with additional opportunities to assist the department as needed around the school schedule.
Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), the Laboratory Intern will assist with patient care, gain hands-on laboratory experience, and further develop phlebotomy skills. Direct supervision means a qualified MLT or MLS is immediately available to provide guidance, direction, and oversight of all assigned duties.The intern may remain in this role for up to six months following graduation, unless they are unsuccessful in passing the ASCP Board of Certification exam after two attempts. Upon successful certification, the intern may be considered for available MLT or MLS positions.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
- Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection, including capillary collections, arterial punctures, and aseptic blood culture collection
- Under the supervision of laboratory technical staff, perform and support laboratory testing, including quality control procedures
- Under the supervision of laboratory technical staff, conduct testing in areas such as hematology, chemistry, blood gases, urinalysis, body fluids, blood bank, coagulation, microbiology, serology, and other laboratory disciplines
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills by prioritizing patient care responsibilities and providing rationale for clinical decisions
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals regarding patient information
- Respond appropriately and adapt in emergency situations
- Maintain compliance with all health and safety standards and guidelines
- Processes specimens by centrifugation and proper distribution to work areas such as hematology, chemistry or microbiology.
- Provides clerical support for Director of Laboratory utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel to produce reports, letters, policies and procedures and assists with special projects.
- Ensures that all blood-drawing trays are kept stocked with appropriate blood drawing supplies.
- Stocks laboratory areas with vendor and storeroom supplies.
- Performs clerical functions of test order entry, specimen login, scanning of reports, filing reports, faxing results, scheduling, and preparing specimens for sending to reference laboratory.
- Performs basic housekeeping duties, including cleaning clerical and patient areas and organizing clerical supplies.
- Maintains good telephone skills by promptly and courteously answering the phone, assisting the caller or referring calls to appropriate technicians or technologists when indicated.
- Attends mandatory meetings and in-services.
- Adheres to Southwest Health’s value-based behavior standards.
- Understands and adheres to Southwest Health compliance and HIPAA standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
